As much as I don't want to take Pyles side here, he's right. From all objective evidence what the AMV community as a whole wants is effects and lots of them. Take a look at the top 10% sometime, the videos on it that won't fall off in the next week or two (the ones with tons of ops instead of just 10) tend to be videos with lots of effects. Euphoria, tainted donuts, sappy self-indulgence, odorikuruu, memories dance, etc. Of course there are a few videos that aren't effect heavy up there but they are most definately the exception not the rule. On another note, the most commented on collabartion around is the effect heavy DDR projects. On a personal note, my highest rated video is the one video where I threw in all sorts of effects just to see if I could do effects. I don't want to encourage Pyles obsession with effects but I can't actually say that he's wrong about them almost being required to gain recognition.flint_the_dwarf wrote:What bugs me about you is that you seem to think that the only things that can get you recognized and appreciated are effects. It is possible to make a good video that is still simple.

I left the AMV community because of this, but lately I've been finding some videos that are not effect heavy and are very very good. I think some people are finally realizing that heavy heavy effects are not mandatory. Alot of videos that are effect heavy are also crappy IMO. But that's omnly my opinion, I can see what you are saying about most people's opinions.godix wrote:As much as I don't want to take Pyles side here, he's right. Godix, I'm not saying that effects don't help achieve popularity (I know that they do)... but that videos that don't rely on effects can be popular or "good." Look at MTT. They don't make effects-heavy videos, but they're one of the most well-known studios.
Even my videos, to some extent. I will attribute some of it to my forum presence, because god knows I have too much spare time... but I don't rely on effects, and still make videos that lots of people (well, enough for me) can appreciate (even if it isn't on a popular level like Euphoria).
Although, yes, in general... popularity means flash and lots of effects. But popular does not mean good (at least in many editors' opinions).

I beg to differ. I guess this will come across as somewhat arrogant, but I have a video on there with 73 opinions (more than 10) and it's VERY simple. Since you think this is the exception, allow me to elaborate:godix wrote:As much as I don't want to take Pyles side here, he's right. Deluge
Alone in the World
Engel
Self-Titled
Evangelion Opus (there are very few effects in this)
Path of the Deus
Spectacular Anime (I guess you could debate how "effectsy" this is)
Caffine Encopium
Play Excel Play
Moonlight Shadow
Video Girl Ai: The Fall
Lullabye (phenomenal video)
Mitternacht
My Iron Lung
Ballad of Yui Hongo
I'd say that's enough to say that they're not the "exception." I imagine there are more, but this was just on a quick glance. These are some of the top videos on the site and I personally don't think any of them rely on effects in the slightest.
I guess what I'm saying is that it's possible to make a "good" video without effects and these are just a handful of examples that show it.

there are lost of effects videos out there, the thing that makes the ones in the top 10% list different is that they use them WELL.
And lets define effect. If you removed the videos that use fades how many are you going to have left on your list dwchang?

Flint:
Let me clarify, I'm not saying *I* think effects are required for a good video, just that they're pretty much required for a popular video. Pyle has stated that his goal is to become one of the popular editors, to the best of my knowledge he never said he wanted to become one of the best editors. Under that viewpoint then Pyle is right that he needs to master effects although I personally don't follow that viewpoint.
I suppose I should point out that I'm being somewhat hyporcritical here because I do have at least one effect crazy video, and it's even the one I'm submitting to Acen in modified form if they ever get the FTP site up. However I did it to learn how to use effects well rather than to become a popular creator and I've since moved on to other aspects of AMVs.

To be honest I don't recognize half those videos but that's probably just because as a general rule I dislike and avoid romance vids. I do note that of the ones I recognize they are either old enough that effects weren't easily avalable to use (Caffine Encopium for example) or that apperently you and I have different ideas on what effects are (evangelion opus uses overlays, lip-sync, and IIRC some flashes). As for your own video, you make such blatent use of piano keys right at the start that I'm astounded you consider it 'very simple'. Just because not all effects are like Euphoria where they stand up and scream 'Look at me' doesn't mean that the effects aren't there and aren't a big element to popularity.

Uhm..there are maybe *two* romance videos in there...godix wrote:dwchang:

I'll agree there in that "effectsy" is a debateable thing. I was more comparing with something like Euphoria while the others I think aren't that effectsy. I could even argue that Sappy Self-Indulgence isn't that effects-heavy, but again...that's subjective.godix wrote:I do note that of the ones I recognize they are either old enough that effects weren't easily avalable to use (Caffine Encopium for example) or that apperently you and I have different ideas on what effects are (evangelion opus uses overlays, lip-sync, and IIRC some flashes).
My point still stands in that a video can do well without being effects-heavy. We can agree there yes? I was only presenting these since it's hardly the exception imo.
Uhm...I'm not talking about that videogodix wrote:As for your own video, you make such blatent use of piano keys right at the start that I'm astounded you consider it 'very simple'.
