Need some advice...

Post by Pwolf » Wed Apr 14, 2004 12:30 am

Ok lemme explain my set-up then explain what i want to do. I have two monitors going into a Radeon 9700 pro. one is a 17" CTR the other is a 19" LCD. I have cable TV in the room but no TV. so i have a veiwsonic video processing unit that converts the TV signal to a VGA signal so i can view it on one of my monitors. The problem with this is the res sucks. so anything above 1024x768 wont come out as sharp as it should.

Ok so the thing i want to do is use a switch to switch between the vpu connection and a direct connection to the computer. Fist thing is what switch should i use. also will this even work without destroying my video card?

I have a Data Transfer Switch. basically a very basic KMV switch right? will that work? here is the settup i have in mind.

first thing that comes to mind is that my video card will fry when i switch it. Anyone know if this will happen if i try this? also does anyone have a better idea?

You could route the TV signal into your computer, assuming you have a capture card. That would simplify a lot of things.

Is the Y-cable necessary? I guess I don't see any reason to send VGA to the Viewsonic box if you're going to switch it downstream from the box anyway. In effect, the Viewsonic box becomes a simple TV tuner for the monitor.

Seems like it should work, although I'd probably get a real KVM switch. Some of those mechanical switch boxes can be harsh.

By any chance does monitor 1 have multiple input connectors?

the point of the Y cable is because one half comes from the viewsonic box and the other comes from the the switch. if i didn't have that, i couldn;t connect both of them to the same video output. i'm pretty sure it will work. but main concern is the video card. i paid $300 for it and i want it to last, lol :P

Newegg.com has a capture card (alone just for capturing) for 30 bucks.

No videocard included, just a simple Tv In (rf module) I bought one and it's not half bad.

Dunno if you'd like it, and I havnt had the time to try it with my new pc yet so..
