Processor, ram, and HD that are more important than video cards.
What about the hard drive? I have 40 GB (of which only 6-8 is usualy in use) and plenty of off-site storage (with a fast connection, for now). How big do project files generaly get?
You want as much as you can get. 32GB should be workable, but more is always better. I'm currently using up about 32GB of space spread out over about 3 videos, but I have most everything trimmed down to only the scenes that I need. If you wanna store full episodes/series to work with, then you might need more.
I'd do anything for even 20 gigabytes of free space...

It really depends on the length and quality of your source. From my [very limited] experience, an episode of raw DVD footage takes up about 800MB, the song file about 40MB, the Huffyuv export from Premiere about 1.8GB, and any temporary, intermediate files around 600MB per episode. This is for an AMV that's around four minutes long.

By the way, I use Win2K also. Rock on.

My friend Sarah did a video to "River Valley" by Mox Fruvious that you might like. It's called Divergence (My World).

My first several videos were done with~5 gig avalable and my later videos were done with ~100 gig avalable. I was able to do things with 5 gig but it was a pain in the ass to do an quality suffered because I just didn't have the space to use Huffyuv much. When I got some free space I found that with rips and project files and so on that I took between 40 to 50 gig per project if I made no effort to keep it down.

I'd like to take a second to say that the video card is the LAST thing you should spend your cash on if you're upgrading. Video cards only deal with video coming in (i.e. displaying it on the monitor from data) not ripping, processing, etc.

Well, essentially.
