USB 2.0 External hard drive crashed!!! WHY,WHY,WHY,WHY,WHY.

Post by x_rex30 » Mon Apr 12, 2004 11:34 pm

For some reason everytime I opened the External hard drive folder, my computer said something about an error, and it just closes on me. Im thinking it had something to do with ForceASPI, because it only started after I downloaded that program(witch I think I didn't need), and clicked on one of the icons in its folder. Whatever it may have installed, is there some way to install over it with a similar program. I ended up formatting the drive and so far it looks to be running ok, but im afraid the problem may start up again. Does anyone know what could cause this problem to happen in an external drive? Luckly I only had the drive for less than a week and that I was able to take stuff that I needed off of it, through the search option in the start menu^_^.

first try defragmenting your internal HDD< then if you can, defrag the external one as well, if neither of these work, then try reinstalling a USB 2.0 driver on your computer (even though it came native with winXP). if these still don't work, try uninstalling that program you were talking about and see if that works, and if that last step does, it looks like you wont be using that program anymore.
System Info: Mac dual 1.25ghz G4 server, running Mac OSX Panther Server, 2gig DDR ram, 120gigx4 HDD, Pinnacle DC3000 Video Card, and a whole host of software goodies. Also have a 700mhz G3 iBook, used as a terminal.

The programs working fine after I formated it, and doing what you mention would very much be considered a good way to lower the chances dramatically, from it happening again. If I realy want to get down and technical(especialy since I was attacked by w32), I would go ahead and Format my internal drive. I would have to do allot of CD burning though^_^. Thats something im thinking of doing at a later time. Anyways thnx for the tip.

I finaly found out what caused it. I used Huffyuv v2.1.1 to convert a VOB formated file, and since the output file was in the main folder of the external drive, it would crash upon opening. I found this out from trying to convert another file using Huffyuv, and putting the output file in a more barried folder in my external drive. When I went to the folder that had the file, the drive crashed. So I went into the search in the start menu, so I can obtain the file. After putting it into the recycle bin, I tried opening the Recycle Bin then it crashed. After that I just right clicked on the trash bin and pressed "empty recycle bin".

I think it may have had to do with the program I was using with Huffyuv, or the Huffyuv program itself. The problem could have happend because of the way I configured Huffyuv to convert. Does anyone know the best programs for converting VOB files using Huffyuv? Also if the problem was based on how I configured Huffyuv, could I get some opinions on what you think the best configurations for it is?
