Orphen: To buy or not to buy...

Post by Fluxmeister » Mon Apr 12, 2004 8:22 pm

I am considering buying Orphen for my Retro Video Game project video... I am looking for a decent adventure show with dragons/magic/sword fighting(maybe).

Questions:

- Is the animation fairly good? What would you compare it to?

- Is the show good? :P

- Is 47.99 the right price for a box set? :D

Thanks for any help!

Having never seen Orphen, I can't speak to the quality of it, but I can say that the $48 price is the correct price for RightStuf's 6-DVD bundle. The actual "box" (It's a Perfect Collection, so it's probably packaged as a brick) lists for $90, which RightStuf lists for about $81.

Hey, as I own some of the series, I might be able to help you out a bit.

The animation is nice. It could probably be compared along the lines to Those Who Hunt Elves, or maybe even Outlaw Star.

Unfortunately, it looks like while ADV was putting it on DVD, some of the episode quality got messed up. So at least one episode kinda looks like crap.

And as to the show being good, I'll say yes. The first two episodes are really cool, but I've only seen the first half of the series, so I can't say if it stays good. But I do plan to buy the rest of it someday. Although one thing about it is that the english dub is pretty atrocious.

Hmmm better than those who hunt elves animation? or on par? I am not too worried about the dubs... I never watch them in english anyway...

Just go for the rental. Keep the rips on hand, send back the DVDs, and problem solved! Netflix, if need be.

Frankly, the art quality is a little variable. Parts of Orphen look really good, and parts look bad.

I would say that the animation is better than those who hunt elves, and it's less colorful. And good for you! No one should generally waste their time with dubs (most of them are just soooo bad) at all unless they're blind or illiterate or something.

I am part of the greencine cult currently... I figure $48 isn't bad no matter what... anyone else have any strong opinions before I throw more money at anime?

Do you happen to know if that was because of ADV messing up the DVD (like vol. 1 of eva before it was released)? Or is it just that way because the animators got lazy? I've been wondering about that for a while

I think it was the animators. Kinda like what happened with Love Hina, where some shots are well drawn and others aren't.
