recommend anime?

Post by sunandshadow » Sun Apr 11, 2004 4:32 pm

I actually have enough money left overto buy so anime this month - the question id, what should I get? Here's what I want: an anime that is not horriffic and minimally violent, which has SMART characters, and good science fiction or fantasy world building. Bonus points for romance, comedy, beautiful art, high writing quality, and/or bishounen.

Examples of stuff I loved:
Revolutionary Girl Utena
I My Me Strawberry Eggs
Crest and Battleflag of the Stars
Ai No Kusabi 1-2
Fushigi Yuugi
Yami no Matsuei (Descendants of Darkness?)
Irresponsible Captain Tylor
Berserk
Earthian
Fake
Petshop of Horrors

Other stuff I've already seen, so you know not to recommend them:
Outlaw Star
Trigun
Cowboy Bebop
GreenGreen
Bakuretsu (Sorcerer) Hunters
Ranma 1/2
Psychic Academy
E's Otherwise
Like the Wind, Like the Rain
Boys Be
Kizuna 1-3
Red Riding Hood ChaCha
Photon
Angel Sanctuary

Dangit, I was going to suggest Chobits, but most of the characters are really stupid, with maybe 3 exceptions

oh well, lessee... what do you mean by minimally violent? Ex: Silent Mobius (the TV series) meets all of your other requirements, but there is a good amount of shooting and fistfights. It's not gross though. Some of the characters are fairly smart, and there's a lot of romance.

I also like Record of Lodoss War (especially the TV series, though the OVA is prettier). But again, there IS violence. Also, some of the characters are dense. There is also romance and comedy, and it's in a fantasy setting, while Silent Mobius is in a futuristic one, with flying cars, etc.

Well, did you see both sequel series to Crest of the Stars? There's Banner and Banner II, and there's an OVA on the last disc of Banner II.

As for sci-fi/fiction, try Bubblegum Crisis: Tokyo 2040. It's got a fair bit of violence, but it's very much a cyberpunky anime. Ghost in the Shell is in a similar vein, but the violence there is extremely graphic.

You could also go for these:
RahXephon
Ah! My Goddess (OVA and movie)
Full Metal Alchemist (Excellent, but has a good bit of violence)

Wolf's Rain - bishonen, fantasy galore, very pretty, endearing characters (none are really dumb, just a few who are young); drawbacks - rather angsty at times, and a little violent in a few scenes (wolf fights?)

If you liked Earthian and Ai no Kusabi, I'd wager you'll love this series. ^.~

Another pretty one would be Prince of Tennis - it's a bishonen anime, rather cute, lots of endearing characters, next to no real violence; but it's long and isn't going to be licensed any time soon.

An angsty but surprisingly good ova would be I'll/CKBC - it's pretty much a bishonen anime (based off the manga), but it's very pretty and has a rather deep plot for something so short. I have a vid for this anime if you want to see what it's like.

I didn't think Wolf's Rain had the yaoi element in it. Wait.....a little angsty, and a little violent?

Oh god.... Beware the chibi specials.

I'll keep this clean and simple...RahXephon and Saiyuki. I am a very pround owner of both of them.

Maybe take a look at fruits basket. too many warm fuzzies at times but its very funny. What I don't get is other DVDs can't have the same number of episodes per disc as fruits basket. 6-7 episodes per disc is what I'd like to see more of. But then again I suppose there could be a bit of a profit loss. But at the same time it could promote sales...*continues to babble to herself*

Actually I've already seen Fruits Basket and Ghost in the Shell - they accidently didn't make it onto my list, sorry! o.O Gravitation should be on there too, now that I think about it. And I read the manga of Chobits.

Haiband Renmei sounds awesome! Wolf's Rain, El Hazard, and X all look interesting, I'll have to check them out. Record of Lodoss war I saw the first episode of and thought the characters seemed dumb (and I didn't like the device that they had already had som adventures and become heroes and fallen in love, etc. before the series started). But Ashram looks pretty cool. Do Deedilt and Parn get all the screen time, or do the villians get a good chunk of it?

Anybody have any opinions about Legend of Basara or Heroic Legend of Arislan?
