IVTC vs. deinterlacing on newer series

Post by norskotaku » Thu Apr 08, 2004 4:32 pm

I've been using IVTC on all of my footage this year, and the results have been great. however, a friend recently suggested that on newer series that are done by computer, not cell animation, it would make more sense to deinterlace, since the footage was not originally film.

any thoughts on this?

I'm about to start a RahXephon video, and if this thinking is correct, and this series was not originally done on film, then using IVTC as usual would be removing frames unnecessarily. does this really matter, though? if I don't use IVTC, then my premiere project will be done at 29.97 fps instead of 24, so wouldn't the overall length of the footage not really change? I want to do this the best way possible, so any advice is welcome.

(I've read up on this as much as I can, and my understanding is that it is best to edit with progressive footage, rather than edit with interlaced and try to deinterlace later on. I had this problem with my earlier videos, which combined interlaced anime footage and progressive footage such as credits or white/black screens. deinterlacing never quite looked best.)

Even if the animation wasn't done on film, it probally still was done at 23.976fps. Those 6 frames a second add up fast when you have to animate them so most studios don't bother as you can't really tell the difference anyway. Deinterlacing is for interlaced source, 60 fields a second. Most footage isn't "interlaced" but rather has interlacing in it due to the converstion to 29.97. You would have to look at the footage and see if every field has interlacing in it. If it doesn't, then you need to IVTC it as it originally was done in 23.976.

thanks mckeed! I had a gut feeling I could still do it the same way, but guess I needed a vote of confidence, you know. ^_^
