This seems to fit what you need for playing. For editing it's a bitch, even with the codecs installed WPC and VirtualDubMod are the only two things I can get to show the video and VirtualDubMod keeps crashing halfway through.

OGM IS A CONTAINER, NOT A CODEC!

Ahem.

Anyway, Media Player Classic will play OGMs standalone.

I know this, because I use MPC, I have never installed an ogm directshow filter, and I can read OGMs just fine. Playing the stuff inside OGMs is of course a different story.

My computer can play the audio just fine (duh, it's usually MP3 or OGG) and the video is a different story. I have to watch it on my dads computer in order to have a nice smooth picture. He has an AMD Athalon XP 2400+ and I have a Pentium 2 333 MHz. My video gets unsynched the second I start playing it and I usually end up closing it only to try and get rid of everything else that might cause my system to lag. I've tried many players (Zoom, WMP, BS and MPC) and it still lags, maybe cause I have the FFDshow filters on my computer and it's lagging... I'm gonna try putting MPC on the computer behind me (AMD K6-2-400 MHz) and see how well that works. I doubt it will though...

I can't wait til I get my nice little 3 GHz laptop. Or until I get a few paychecks and get a new mobo and CPU (it's gonna run me around $500 for a mobo with on-board LAN, on-board sound and a fast bus, and a good CPU, like 2.4 GHz and a stick of 512 RAM, maybe even a GIG, just depends on where I go). And I might get a bigger HDD too, I only have one 15 gb, one 20 gb and an 8.4 gb. Might pick up a nice 250 gb.

/me does some shopping around. Oooohhh, spiffy...

I've seen OGM's being used more and more, mainly because the container can support multiple audio formats, subtitles and a video stream. They're nice if you have a fast computer...

Well, there are precious few proprietary programs that support open-source formats, so an extraction/reencode with Vdub is likely in order.

yeah ok, but, say that i want to re-encode it to a low quality divx or something with vdub (or vdubmod, if it makes a difference), will the subtitles still apear ? and can vdub actualy open ogm ?

Yes, I believe that Vdub can open ogm's. I also think you can specify which, if any, subtitle streams appear.
