Here's how i do it (in case you don't want to read it, although you should! =\ )

Open the .avi in a program called VirtualDub. go to "Video > compression" from the top menu and select "XviD" if you have it (since it's the one I use). And select "configure," and from a drop down menu on the next window select "1st pass - quantizer." Set the bar on the quantizer section to 2 or 3 (high quality options; the higher the number, the lower the quality). Then click "OK" and such.

Now go to "Audio > full processing mode." After clicking this, it will unlock more options when you select Audio from the menu again. Select "Audio" again and click on "compression." A window will pop up, and select "Lame MP3" from the left and on the right highlight a bitrate. I recommend 192 kbps CBR, but that's just me. Press ok, and go to "File > save avi" and there you go. :]

NOTE: If you want, you can mess with filters, too. But I'll just explain compression since that's all you asked for.

This is just my way, there are tons more (and maybe better) ways to compress.

Don't do this.

First, filters have a MUCH larger impact on compression quality than do compressor parameters; the parent post, it seems, would have you believe that this is not the case.

Secondly, you can almost always attain very good quality with a significantly smaller filesize by using the 2-pass encoding method. If you are using an XviD 1.0 release candidate, look here for a good starter guide. Otherwise, use the method outlined in the existing guide.
