Just crop off the bottom section of your entire video, and pretend it's in widescreen. :P
Slacker!
Just efficient. There's a difference. I think...

which results in lower pic quality, esspecialy if ya crop at a wierd part. meh, most fansubers are gona be using matroska prety soon, some allready do, so its gona be less of an issue. still, nothing beats having it on dvd, esspecialy seeing as most dvd's now come with a creditless version of the opening and ending (which is a life saver as openings usualy have some awsome footage to use in amv's)

I fail to see how any self-respecting individual could even consider matroska a valid alternative.

Riiiiiight....

I tried to watch a Makostra vide once. Only once. I installed it, watched the fansub. No issues. Then I tried to watch something else. BAM! After installing Makostra, I counldn't watch any other format. So I uninstalled Makostra, deleted the fansub in question, and went back to enjoying some more videos.

I'm not touching a .mkv with a 10TB partition until they have a plugin that works similar to the .ogm plugin.

I don't know about Matroska, but I know I've seen fansubs in Ogg Media format... Oh wait! Those weren't fansubs, they were DVD rips.

Why would fansubbers switch from good old-fashioned AVI? Most fans who would download them won't care about being able to turn off the subs, they don't have other audio tracks to include, and DivX/XviD plus MP3 works quite well for most people.

Strange, I never had a problem viewing matroska files, nor did it give me problems with anything else.
