The Glorious Burden

Post by nailz » Sun Apr 04, 2004 10:57 am

You know, I'm aware this has been brought up about 10 times already, but I must say I'm terribly impressed with Iced Earths The Glorious Burden. Ripper seems to fit the band perfectly, and while the guitars and music still seem too generically dark for my liking, I thougherally enjoy the contrast between that and the vocal atmosphere Ripper brings in place of Barlow (who, in my opinion, just made the whole band suck).

all in all, 4 horns up. \m/ >.< \m/

On the first half of Glorious Burden, where he's singing material that was written for Matt's voice, he sounds like Halford. Maybe all those years singing in that Priest tribute act (and the later Priest tribute act involving Dowding and Tipton... :P ) have just trained him to sound like that when he's singing for someone else. "The Reckoning" is pretty egregious in this sense.

However, on Gettysburg, he sounds like Tim Owens. There isn't another singer (as I'm aware of) who could have pulled off that material better or more in tune with what Schaffer's music required.

Is there anyone on this board who actually has Heart of a Killer? I certainly don't (there's a reason why Winter's Bane is a trivia question instead of a band), but would greatly appreciate some insight as to what Owens sounded like the last time he was in an original band.

He doesn't really sound EXACTLY like Halford, but I think there is a definite resemblance, and i think it helps the band. But yah, you can definitely hear the music is meant for Matt.

I told you you'd like it. :? And now that I've heard it so much, I really only like the trilogy. But I really like it.

I have listened to the whole album top to bottom, bottom to top, left to right, so on. Except for thw two versions of "When The Eagle Cries", The Glorious Burden is nearly a perfect album to me. I love Ripper in this album he kicks ass but dispite how he rules on the album I still miss Barlow, I honestly feel Greenface and Hollow Man would have been done better with him in it but Ripper does a good job nonetheless.
