April Fools Day Reply

Post by outlawed » Sat Apr 03, 2004 10:39 am

Well another April Fools has come on gone. Hope you all get a little smile out of the Naruto Licensed and Kinsey Institute Hentai Study posts. At this time I sure hope that 90% of you realize they were April Fools day pranks. Don't know how so many fell for it... I mean Naruto is going to be at least 2000 episodes not 1000 ^_^. I hope to address some of the questions I was e-mailed directly or asked on forums below.

Thanks to all those who played along. As for those who don't fall for it, you don't need to reply with "didn't fool me" right away (at least wait till the end of the day). You just may be preventing another quality individual from being suckered (we can test them on their own merits). As for the haters... try to realize I have always designed these to give themselves away. Yes I am being funny with the content in the prank posts. However, there is another component of the entertainment which is those who are deficient in reason or just plain gullible. The enjoyment comes from their reactions to the unbelievable prank-post and their subsequent ranting and raving. Many of those who fall for it may be online anime netizens who seem to have nothing better to do than type BS everyday about what the latest anime rumors are. Teaching them a little lesson about believing whatever they read can be a valuable thing. What better way to prevent people from forwarding on all those virus hoaxes and chain letters than to teach them the ability to question. Question what you read on the net. Question what you read in the paper. If it doesn't help them...well...we could just laugh at them next year I guess.

Breakdown of the Naruto Licensed post:
--------------------------------------
Topical - Naruto is a hot anime with the target readership.
Company fans like will lose license.
Company fans hate will butcher title.
Illegal downloaders will lose source of free subs.

The above are enough to get people upset without even reading the full article or thinking rationally if they are so inclined to give more importance to anime licensing than it's worth.

Naruto Post Believability.
--------------------------
The attempt is to make the post believable to an extent but throw in huge red flags that indicate it is a fake. This drives the wedge from those who can be fooled by legitimate faking and those who are suckered because of their over-zealousness. The main point that drives believability is that people believe what they want to believe. People want Naruto to be licensed. People want a good company to get it but people also believe that is highly likely someone unfavorable will get it and they will alter it in some way. Those worried about this are usually the type that makes a big fuss when some USA company releases an anime and there is some minor extra missing or some stupid minor translation type issue that is insignificant yet they make a huge fuss about it. The reality is if they knew that much about it and it's so specific then it doesn't apply to a general audience because it in no way damages the spirit of the anime or ruins the general audience's enjoyment of the anime. So for that type of person it basically breaks down to "I want the exact same thing the Japanese fans got but I'm not Japanese nor do I speak it." I say if you have to have 100% what the Japanese fans got then you can go to Japan. I am aware of these types of individuals (so many of them on animeondvd.com forums) so with fake licensing articles I basically prey on their worst fears.

Well technically if the person actually reads the whole first post the non foolingness doesn't matter.

Though I'm not saying you didn't fool me, I got to the whole second paragraph *i think* before I realized.

Wonderful, another dubbed series where they change the name and kick out the good stuff. And I don't think the show has 1,000 episodes.... Is that possible, lol. Sailor Moon is only 200 episodes and it's one of the longest running animes that I can think of atm. :)

At max I would say that Naruto gets to 400 or 500 eps maybe. Just because their is manga material to work off of doesn't mean that they will continue making the series. In all realism, I think 300 will be the limit.

In reality there isn't even enough manga for 100 episodes yet. That's why Naruto is stretched. This happens to all Jump manga that are converted to anime. They have to slow down the show and stretch the story out like crazy because it is BIG money and they need lots of episodes for the kids to keep watching. Yes, Naruto is a kid's TV show. That doesn't mean older people don't like it. It's very common to see people in their late 20's still reading Jump in Japan. However, Naruto is clearly more popular in the USA with 20-somethings than it is with 20-somethings in Japan.

The original master of episode-strtching was the Dragonball Z anime; they needed a LOT of episodes because it was super popular and kids would keep watching it. Dragonball is often belittled by some hardcore anime fans in the USA but in actuallity it holds a place of much higher importance than they realize in Japan.
