Expectations

Post by Fluxmeister » Thu Apr 01, 2004 9:33 pm

Apparently I am not meeting the requirements of some amv viewers. I didn't know I was on a contract basis with each viewer. I am fine with complaints etc... but when expectations and demands of "don't do it again" or "fix this or your first born will have no hands" I start to wonder why I should even acknowledge the comments.

Here are two recent examples that I am not really sure how to respond to without basically saying "Why did you email/pm this? What obligation do I have to serve you?"

As I seem to recall... I started to make videos because I enjoyed editing. I especially enjoy the final result. I like my videos... well except maybe the photon one.

Images (yes I know many people don't enjoy this video)
just saw the last exile video, it was sooooo disappointing. I expected soo much from you since eternal damnation is like my favorite amv ever. And since Last Exile was a favorite series of mine in which I've watched numerous times trough, I was saddened with twice the impact.

I dont want this to come off as just another stupid negative comment at all, i can see a productive use for incorporating still pictures into videos. Unfortunately you far exceeded that amount, and created a bloated 80MB slide show that can easily be squeezed into a ~15mb flash movie. I totally think your last exile video in no way stands for anything about you. I see all the effort, quality & craftsmanship you've exerpted into your previous offerings. Eternal Damnation is undoubtedly at the pinnacle of AMV's in an elite group of 2, with Gary Club's X-tv AMV, Touched. Those 2 videos are examples of perfection. and i do mean perfection! every aspect was perfectly setup, the music & whats on screen, the way scenes were flowingly integrated into the next, even your little intro beat with the hellsing logo and photos around it was DOPE! Watching all those still pictures in your Images video was a severely depressing moment for me. The more time i spent watching some ultra wide screen still picture scrolling slowly across the screen, the more sadder and sadder I felt for last exile and your video.

Please give justice to Last Exile and re-do your Images amv in a way that will truly make you proud. I've seen all the interesting ways you've edited things, and I still can't believe your blatantly bland methd of still image use. And having watched the series those images in general were pretty unimpressive. You cut yourself WAY SHORT on the video.... plaase please don't leave lavi & clause trapped in the evil slideshow they are currently in! Save them!!!!!!!

Zaibach Anthem
I'm used to seeing these amazing Escaflowne music videos come out of your website. Fate is definately my favourite. (with Souls of Rage and Sorrow coming in at second!) It captures Dilandau's personality, his past, his family, etc. all into one... and best of all - no Hitomi. I downloaded Zaibach Anthem this afternoon after just buying 'Take A Look in the Mirror', (yes, just... I'm a high school student on a University student's funding. -.-') expecting what is currently my favourite song on the album to have an awesome video to be made by you.

I have to say... I'm dissapointed.

Oh, no. Don't get me wrong. The editing is marvelous. I especially love the "hey, hey, hey, hey," part with Folken appearing on different parts of the screen. You never cease to amaze me with your perfect timing and lip-syncing. (I still don't understand how you manage to do it. O.O) But something just isn't right... the song... just doesn't fit. Its a good idea, but it just doesn't work. A couple other people who've watched the video agree with me.

This has only ever happened with your videos once before, and I hope it never happens again.
I better quit before I displease/disappoint someone else.

Although it's April Fool's day... I am not kidding about these comments, they are real.

On the topic of opinions etc, I do very much appreciate the opinions of others, whether they be positive or negative. I can respect a negative/positive comment if presented in a reasonable fashion. It is perfectly ok to not like a video and express it to me. Lord Rae, for example, didn't like my Eternal Damnation video (and I am sure others share the same view) and made it clear why and didn't make any kind of personal attack.

It's not like I have expectations from the viewers to love all the videos I make... "BY WATCHING THIS VIDEO, YOU AGREE TO LIKE IT AND ENDLESSLY PRAISE ME AS THE SAVIOR" will be attached to each video from this point forward ...

Simply put: I am not here to serve you.

I've been bugged by that too, but I make sub-par videos all the time. :P I really like what you did with Images, even if I rarely watch it. Reviewability is low only because of the song and the pace, as far as I'm concerned.

Frankly, I love the direction you went with that video, and I like that you show such diversity. But of course some people are going to want something other than what you give them. :?

i bet that made you feel better. a cody rant.

Good:
well, what can i say. you provide good arguments and you quoted your sources. good diction and readable grammar. good rant.

Bad:
you missed out on a comma after "apparently," and after "no hands." too long. go bored while reading. you need it to be punchy, and bitch alot. you bitched some, but it was weak. i highly recommend a do over because i know you can do a lot better.

general: yeah, that's all. rants are good. i like rants.

Just shrug it off Fluxy, unfortunately fans can get a little too big for their britches sometimes. I get the same type of thing from time to time.
The best effects are the ones you don't notice.

*sigh*

Things like this happen in many areas. Fans take their expectations a little too seriously, and get upset when their 'standrds' aren't met. Example: after a recent showing at my local anime club, some fan decided they didn't like what had been shown. The result? A nasty-gram to the club. Ugh. The end result was that we ignored it.

I guess this just comes with the territory, Fluxy. You can't please everyone, and if you're actually trying, well, maybe something odd is going on. I think it's been fairly well established that most people around here edit because they want to, not because of someone else. No matter what you do, someone won't be happy with it. All that changes is who is unhappy, and how vocal they are.

Relish the highs, and do your best to ignore the lows.

Just my $.02.

I really don't know what to say here and the obvious thing would be to "fuck what they think and make it the way you want".

Well,

You are Fluxmeister, your own Fluxmeister.
