The Black Mages (Nobuo Uematsu)

Post by Flint the Dwarf » Fri Mar 19, 2004 3:39 am

Wow... anyone heard anything from them? I guess this is Nobuo Uematsu's band, and they play, obviously, Final Fantasy stuff. But this isn't midi quality music here, it's redone with drums, guitars, keyboards, and synthesizers. But it still maintains that nostalgic midi sound, just... much nicer. I just listened to "Dancing Mad," which is the end music for Final Fantasy VI, and it's 12 minutes long. But it's amazing. There's even a seriously awesome guitar solo almost 9 minutes into it. And the track begins with the typical Final Fantasy VI sound, but higher quality. It's not a jazzed up remix. It's actually progressive rock.

It looks like there's 10 tracks on the album, covering a few of the games but not all. I found it here at Amazon but it's an import.

I think I'm in love. <3

I like Battle on the Big Bridge (Gilgamesh's Theme Remix from FFV).
Have I mentioned that Gilgamesh's Theme just rocks in general?

Now that I've heard the whole album, I must say it's among my favorites. \m/

Oh, and Koji, you read tablature? Here, try to play this. ^_^ It starts easy...

As somebody who listens to video game music nearly non-stop, I readily call FF:BM "trash."

The only two tracks worth keeping are "Battle on the Big Bridge" (since Gilgamesh's theme is top-tier) and "Force Your Way." Everything else was either dominated by crappy synth or just plain poorly arranged.

The only exception would be Dancing Mad, which was just a bad piece to begin with.

That's hilarious, because the arrangements were basically the same as the originals, but played with different instruments. Some people simply can't deal with any kind of prog, so they cover that up by calling it trash. It's okay, you're not the only one. ^_^

Or maybe, prog really IS trash, and people who're a fan of it, like to attempt to justify it by calling it 'artistically advanced'.

It's ok, you're not the only one. ^_^

I never said it was artistically advanced. I'm perfectly fine with people having their own opinions, but then calling it trash because they don't like it is pretty ridiculous.

Well, could I change my statement to say, "In my opinion, it is trash?"

To be honest, most of the reason I didn't like this album was because I heard it hyped up so much as "an excellent rock album." In my little world, rock is driven by guitars, not synth. The term "prog" means nothing to me.

However, I did forget to mention that I liked J-E-N-O-V-A in all its half-techno, half-rock, experimental glory.

Well, I did say it was prog rock. :?

Well, that's sort of what prog is... though it's more like 100% rock, 25% techno/synth/keyboard stuff, and 50% experimental. Yes, prog is 175% music. Yes, this album was extremely heavy on synth/keyboard, but that's to be expected when you're converting midi sounds to rock.
