There's an entire sub-genre of electronica called Goa trance, named after a district on the east coast of India (map). It also goes under names like psy-trance, psytekk, etc. But I don't think you'll hear too much violin work in this type of music.

Head over to Ishkur's Guide to Electronic Music if you want to hear some samples.

You could try Avalon "Eurasia"
The singer (Chitty) is from Sri Lanka and there's a heavy Indian influence on the CD with sitar and Indian chanting. It's prog-metal if you're curious. Regretfully I believe they called it quits not too long ago.

*grumble* I really didn't want to tell anyone because I was going to use him for several AMVS. However since I am unfortunately nice you must go check on Nitin Sawhney He is fantastic, case closed. In fact I am sort of disapointed that no one mentioned him sooner.
