Would a heartbeat/flashing effect be considered overdone?

I did something like this in my Deliverance video. In the song, there's a heartbeat'esque sound that provides the beat of the song, and I faded to white about like 5-10% opacity each beat. It's a pretty subdued effect though (at least to me. I've heard very mixed opinions about it. Some people say it's distracting and just shouldnt be there, others say it adds a lot to the video and works great)...

As much as I dislike flashes and want to say don't do it, the real answer is that it depends on how it's done. The fact that you suspect it's overused might be a hint though. You could try different but similar effects there instead.

You know, it's whatever the music calls for.

When something works, it works, and I don't really care if it's 'overdone' or 'cheesy'.

See if it works, then decide. If it works, there should not be any reason for you not to use them.
The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…

There's another bit to that quote: "greater minds don't need to"
