huffyuv or .vob ?
just wandering, what are the advantages/disadvantages of the mediums ?

HuffYUV is contained within AVI. AVI is supported by most all windows video applications. huffYUV is also faster @ playback than the AVISynth/VOB method. MPEG2 is contained within a VOB, is smaller & requires AVISynth to be used directly in most windows video applications. Also a index must be created. Whatever headaches that are caused when trying to get DVD2AVI / AVISynth installed + working also have to be considered. But if you don't have a lot of space it's the way to go.

Also, just because you CAN edit vobs directly in Vegas (or whatever) doesn't mean you are making life easy for yourself.
One of the advantages of using huffyuv (and MJPEG) as editing codecs is that every frame is an I-frame. Meaning you can make a cut wherever you want - which is not the case if you edit in MPEG2 (i.e. with the vobs).

This isn't true if you use avisynth as it generates all the I-frames on the fly. Even without avisynth this isn't true. Using avisynth you can deinterlace while editing. Not the fastest thing to do. I but i can play at 15fps in premire which isn't all that bad since I don't really play through my footage.Kalium wrote:For one thing, the .vob's are frequently interlaced. If you have the space for an entire series in huffy then by all means work in huffyuv. At approximately 20GB for an episode, 20X26 = a lot of space. Its a tradeoff. The time its going to take to make cleaned huffyuv files for all the eps would probally be longer than the total rendering time if you were frameserving vobs. I guess this depends on how often you change your mind. If you are making huffy clips, that is a lot better. But I generally never make clips to edit with. I like the flexibility of being able to go through all my footage whenever I want, without then going back and getting more clips if I missed something.
Many people use motionjpeg codec as it produces small files sizes, quick to generate, but lower quality and then swap them out for avs files after they are done editing to get the max quality. This is covered in AD and ErMaC's guide.
