problems viewing mpeg2 with windows media player

Post by norskotaku » Wed Mar 17, 2004 6:38 pm

recently, one of my computers has started showing a logo at the top right corner of my mpeg2s when viewing them in windows media player. at first it was just a small logo sitting there, which I didn't understand, now it has started dancing around, and a message runs across the bottom of the video saying "my trial period has expired" and I need to register my player. I'm totally confused.

it's not doing this for mpeg1 files, and it never did this before for mpeg2, so I don't understand where it came from. has anyone ever heard of this before?

I don't think WMP can play back MPEG-2 unless you have a software DVD player (PowerDVD, WinDVD etc.) or a separate codec installed. Perhaps your DVD software's trial periol has expired?

On a side note, I wouldn't use WMP to watch MPEG-2 videos. It doesn't handle the aspect ratio correctly in its newer versions.

Huh? WMP9 has always done aspect ratio correction for me (though I don't think WMP8 did), and that's the newest version that I know of...

I've still got WMP8. :) Let's rephrase: WMP doesn't handle aspect ratios correctly in some versions.

never had any problems with aspect ratios, but since I'm getting the same junk in WMP and winamp, it leads me to believe that whatever is decoding my mpeg2 has changed. I don't know what it is, though, so it's gonna be a major headache to try and find it.

Obviously your software DVD player/decoder package has expired. Just uninstall it and then download a different decoder from another company. Like I used to use Intervideo WinDVD trial, then I switched to PowerDVD, and now Nero.

I downloaded a codec pack for MPEG 2 that did the exact same thing, the only thing I suggest is uninstall the codec’s and hope for the best.

Media Player Classic plays mpeg-2 out of the box, via a buildin mpeg-2 decoder. I found it the safest solution available.

Thats WMP8 and it sucks. WMP9 sucks as well... only not as badly, lol. Go do yourself a favour and get WMP9.
