Having the part-time job working age being set at 16 would be my guess.
Really, it's that people get involved in a story regardless if it's a movie, book, or anime series. They care about the characters and want them to be happy. That's why sad stories make you cry even though they are fictional. It's actually a hallmark of a good telling and interesting characters.
Or, some people really do just have too much time on their hands.

Both is most likely. After all, without the spare time they don't come up with such bizarre ideas. But then, the very idea of an AMV probably owes its existance to too much spare time, so we shouldn't complain.
