AMV Slump????

Post by mdef7611 » Tue Mar 09, 2004 9:11 pm

ok listen before anyone says anything, im not here to point fingers at any creators or say i could do better myself because i can't, i dont have the time or the creatitity. But has anyone noticed the perpetual slump AMV's have been in for the last 2 years. I mean if you compare the quality and amount and really the overall fun of the AMVs that came out 2 years ago and the one's out now its absolutely ridiculous. Im not trying to say that the talents of the AMVs out now are lower or anything, i acually think they are much more in depth as far as editing goes and the creators are amazing. My hat goes off to all of them. But i mean for godsakes, "This is DBZ life"(which is prob my fav video ever) has been in the top ten for like 2 years. Where are the new video's. Is it a lack of anime out there right now? Maybe. I dont know. And anothing thing. This is just my opinion but i am sick and tired of AMV love songs. I think the best two combo's (excluding such greats euphoria which is an editing masterpiece and you know the others that go along with it) are Anime and either rock or operatic ballad. Im tired of seeing little girls in skirts up to there crotches crying over and over and over again. Im saying it now, SAILOR MOON AND EVERYTHING LIKE THAT IS FOR PEOPLE WHO DONT GET OUT ENOUGH OR PEDOPHILES. You can look at it whatever way you want to, artisitcally, comedically, whatever. Its still drawings of little girls and boys. Japanese culture is like that and they admit it. Fine then but not me.

Im lost my train of thought

Oh yeah AMV's. So in closing i just wanted to know what you guys thought for the droughts of good ol hardcore, beatin people up to rock music videos went to. Later

well more creators are joining, and creating good vids.. its a lot harder for new vids to pop up on the top 10% now because they have a LOT of catching up to do! Im seeing a LOT of newer creators who make Really good vids... and as for the speed.. this month alone *stating march 1st* i've already poopped out 3 vids.. and im working on another as we speak.. check out Crying Angel *on my profile* or check out some of SnhKnives vids *i think thats his .org name* there are a lot of good new vids out there, and i cant name them all right now.. but there out there! and were producing them as fast as we can... the longer it takes to make a vid the better it comes out *usually* so be patient...

what criteria are using to distinguish quality from talent?

I think his post can be summed up as

"I want to see more random fight scenes sped up by 400%. Oh, and lens flares."

ok i can see this snowballing already into an attack on all AMV's. Look, im not an in depth anime watcher. 90% of all the anime I watch is fighting anime and thats the way i like it so im not trying to say i'm an expert on anything. And i was mistaken to say that the old AMV is of a better "quality". I just remember a time when the top 10 was changing consistently with all new AMV's, people always seemed to be in competition with each other and I thought that brought out alot of creative juices than whats out now. And yes i do love random action scenes but thats not all i like.

the reason the top 10 doesn't change as often is not due to a decrease in competition, but rather because the programmers modified the filter in the top 10 to block out videos with less than 8 opinions. this is why a new video that receives a few 'all 10s ops' doesn't appear on the top of the star scale.

current top ten creators that mainly produce rock-action music videos:
tsukin
taskmasta
ssjvegeta17
(this is just a few i know of)

Subjective opinion attempted to be passed off as objective fact.

Not only that, but also highly biased and poorly supported (If at all).

I invite you to look more carefully, or not at all; but then don't complain.

There is more AMV's that were made in the last year than ever before.
There is more good AMV's made in the last year than ever before.
There is more unusual AMV's made in the last year than ever before.

If you're not finding them, you're not looking wekk enough.

*well enough.

Have I mentioned the said rock ballad + beating people up formula is old and takes a convincing execution to impress people these days?
Have I mentioned you're ill-informed about anime and AMV's?

Well, you are

that might be part of the problem...
fighting videos against rock/metal are so stigmatized these days that most editors familiar with the amv scene just avoid making them altogether. perhaps years ago, when newbs weren't flamed for making linkinball z videos (or perhaps kornball z videos then) as badly as they are now, the better-known editors weren't afraid to make their random action-rock videos (e.g. kusoyaro). maybe i'm wrong-- i'm not all too familiar with the old amv scene, but i have noticed recently that some creators try to dissociate themselves from the rock-fighting crowd, and maybe some interesting videos could be made if they didn't.

hmm... well, it is kind of true.

But I still see vids of the sort being made. Look at most Dragonball Z videos, and this is usually what you find (this isn't to say they're bad, just that most of them are indeed rock fighting vids).

And, actually, the upped 'standard of execution' is, for me, probably a good thing. We still have solid action vids; just that they're now better-executed than before.

I do think people should make the kinds of vids they want. As long as they adjust what they expect from the result; if they expect anything at all.
