Senior Project on AMV... need ideas

Post by Kenshin8518 » Tue Mar 09, 2004 4:24 pm

Ok i'm doing my seinor project on Anime Music Videos, and i need some ideas on what exactly to do... here is basically a lineup of things to know:

I get a min of 10 and a max of 15 minutes to report. This means that i can use a max of 1 romatic video, 1 action video, 1 comedy video, and 1 video of a different genre. I am going to explain with the reamining time how to make amv's using ideas from the guides.

Now, what i wanna know is, give me 1 video from each of the categories to use. Note that i would appreciate if the quality of the clips were good and not bad. I also want a video that uses special effects. I'm not saying they use special effects as much as their are Pokemon, but rather that they use special effects and they looks good. Please give me some ideas/tips on this project. Any useful and helpful comments are apprecited. Thanks a bunch!

Instead of choosing things from a couple different genres, I'd historically look at the history of fanvids and the AMV scene in particular and showcase segments of videos from across that timespan. In particular, you should probably reference Kevin Caldwell, Aluminum Studios, Doki (as he's more or less the king of comedy videos), perhaps Nightowl as an example of artistic videos, and perhaps a couple other current "effects-filled vids" (like SRV or Euphoria) to indicate the future of where the hobby is going.

15 minutes isn't *nearly* enough to cover AMVs IMHO, and your project will probably be a lot more interesting if you focus on the history and style of AMVs rather than how to make them.

Let's not forget Kusoyaro, Vlad Pohnert, and perhaps Scott Melzer if you can get your hands on any of his videos. Who else has been around a while?...

Not 'been around a while', but simply older-school but damn good- Bobby 'C-ko' Beaver. Also, IIRC, Rich Lather has been around for quite some time as well.

Ow, big stab action for Ian.

He even won "Creator of the Year" and yet no one named him :-P, although someone named "Shameless Rock Video." Tsk tsk ;).

Personally I'm quite happy to be not to be labelled alongside those geriatrics :P - I'm "the future of where the hobby is going" apparently....

And yeah, anywhere Vlad is mentioned, geriatrics is the proper label ;)

no, that was /sarcasm

I do think that 15 mins will be a little limiting but it's not impossible to get a decent coverage with that... the main thing is that the videos you show are likely to be the exceptions to the rules, IYSWIM

No, I knew it was sarcasm, hence the

In any case, to try and be useful to the topic in hand, my suggestion is showing one of each "genre." You have 15 minutes and on average a music video is between 3 - 5 minutes.

Assuming you do one Comedy, one Drama and one Action and finish in 12 minutes, that'd leave you three minutes to do commentary as well as provide information at the beginning and end of the presentation.

I hope no one gets their feeling hurt by me making recommendations, but I suggest:

Drama - Believe by Kevin Caldwell
Comedy - Right Now Someone is Reading this Title or This Video Sucks (will explain below) both by dokidoki
Action - Evangelion Opus by ShonenDizzyCow or Shameless Rock Video by AbsoluteDestiny

Now I'm sure people will argue based on some of my suggestions since they're not "the best" (to some), however let me explain.

We need to keep in mind that the entire audience aren't necessariliy anime fans. I named "Right Now," but also named "This Video Sucks" since "Right Now" has too many anime-related jokes and "This Video Sucks" is a comedic video that most audiences will "get." Sure it might not be the funniest video in teh world, but it's a good example of a comedy video.

Same goes with "Evangelion Opus." It's a great action video, but I think "Shameless Rock Video" might be better given the general audience. It also illustrates some of the digital effects some creators use.

As for Drama, I wanted to initially list On Your Mark by Studio Ghibli/Hayao Miyazaki. It's my favorite music video and truly demonstrates a great drama video imo. The viewer doesn't even need to understand the japanese lyrics and yet the video still tells a great and emotional story. Unfortunately, it's over six minutes long and thus my reservation.

Good luck on your project!

To add to dwchang's 'action' reasoning thing:

I'd probably keep away from Opus due to the fact that it pretty much requires having seen the series to make sense....

Plus Eva Opus is not up for download, and the video quality in Shameless Rock video is still much nicer.

But otherwise, good suggestions
The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…
