It plays just fine on mine, using either the official DivX 5.1.1 + XVid enabler component, or using the FFusion codecs (implementation of ffmpeg as QuickTime codec).

A mac can play just about any format/codec that you'll find on the Internet. Once I actually installed the software, I have yet to find a video I couldn't get to play. Some editing codecs like HuffYUV don't have a Mac version of course, but that's for editing, not distribution.

Since ffmpegX seems to do halfway decent work, I'm suffering quietly with MPEG-1 for now. I could do a good bit more on compression(Sorenson3 is pretty damn good) if Quicktime was more popular on the PC side(I'm a Mac user); however, given the few hits(much less downloads) my first video has gotten, .mov is apparently avoided almost as much as .rm or .wmv. I've heard comments about the Windows version of Quicktime Player being slow, but Quicktime itself seems to do just fine on Windows anytime I've seen a .mov file played. I have heard that Quikctime for Linux just plain sucks, though.

Quicktime for Linux or Quicktime on GNU/Linux systems?

Quicktime for Linux is a library designed for uncompressed Quicktime movies.

Playback of Quicktime using some of the more popular compression schemes (i.e. Sorenson Vision, Liquid Audio) on GNU/Linux systems has worked for quite a while now.

thus far ive used .wmv (though i am planing to move to xvid) . wmv9 is prety good, so for thoughs that have avioded wmv in the past, give it another try. in the end, besides the quality vs size thing, thier aint much difference between codecs and it shouldnt even be considered to be a deciding factor when your downloading an amv.

Meh. These days it doesn't remember what format you use. Everyone has like every player imaginable.
I usually judge on size. I have DSL but I act like I'm on dial-up lol. If it's like over a certain size, I won't download.

But that's because I'm not a real watcher of AMVs... It's usually spur of the moment when I'm bored. I usually download everything except .rm. I don't think anyone really encoded to that anymore, anyway... 0o

By the way... Question of a Mac user who's never used QT on Windows but who knows the QT API and who knows that it's available for Windows development...

Hasn't anybody developed a free QuickTime full-screen player for Windows? That would be quite easy. That sort of thing must exist...

Just click the maximixe thing in QT, and then stretch it so it fills your screen....

Or, like Trythil said, Quicktime Alternative.
