HD format killed all my videos. Again...

Post by CaTaClYsM » Tue Mar 02, 2004 5:26 am

I've had 4 or 5 very good vids I was working on that I eather had the ball rolling on all the way up to 90% completly disapear on me now because I had to format my HD. How can I rig up my D drive to have ALL my AMV stuff on it (VOB's, D2V files, AVS files, and premiere) on it so that way when my primary HD decides to commit sepuku I can just format it and all my important AMV files will be unscathed?

I must be missing something… All the tools I use allow me to create and use files wherever I want.

Now, if you are talking about the tools themselves then that is different. Some WILL allow you to install them wherever you want, but since they all keep lots of stuff in the registry you are screwed.

Your options are:
  • Get a new drive (or a less lame one at any rate)
  • Have an effective backup regimen
What I tend to do is have a old backup of all programs and regularly backup the system and move it on to disk - it has also proven to be a more effective rollback mechanism too.

In fact, here is my script:

Code: Select all

@echo off
if exist "d:\SystemBackup\State 1.rar" del "d:\SystemBackup\State 1.rar"
if exist "d:\SystemBackup\State 0.rar" ren "d:\SystemBackup\State 0.rar" "State 1.rar"
ntbackup backup systemstate /M copy /J "Boot SysState" /F "d:\SystemBackup\State 0.bkf"
"c:\Program Files\WinRAR\WinRAR.exe" m "d:\SystemBackup\State 0" "d:\SystemBackup\State 0.bkf"
echo.
echo Complete
Naturally, you will have to create d:\SystemBackup. Also be careful of the line wrapping in the above code box..

I got really excited, thinking high-definition caused you to want to metaphorically kill your videos, as it would be nicer to edit HD. Now I'm sad again. I'm sorry about your hard drive...

Have you considered getting two SATA drives and RAID 1 (or 5 if you want more than two drives)? The cost is more of course but if one of the drives died you wouldn't lose a single thing.

Uhh....just copy the files there. Its not that hard. You want to reinstall programs anyway as they normally add registry entries and whatnot. You loosing your videos is your own stupidy. Ever hear of backing things up?

The drive itself didn't die. They've never died. It's just that one thing led to another and the only way to fix my problem was a format. I know that the D2V and AVS files can be stored on the D drive without worries. What I'm wondering is if premiere can be installed on the D drive and survive a format. I'm doubting it since it probably stores stuff in the registry. Is there anything else (aside from the previews) stored for a vid outside of the project files? If saving hte project files on the D drive is enough I'm going to kill myself. :x

all you need to put on the other drive is the d2v files....avs files....source files, audio files and project file. Essentially anything realted to your video. If you want to keep your preview files as well make sure you tell premire to store previews in the same folder as project files. Generally you can have them in their own project folder like i do. I don't know why you have to reformat your HD so often where its a problem. I know i can completely reuibld my system in 2 hours from start of the win2kpro install till i can sit down and edit again. I generally reformat once a year unless i upgrade operating systems. Then I do a clean install.

My directory looks like this
d:\projects\projectname ##I keep project file here and any exports
d:\projects\projectname\audio\ ##original Wav
d:\projects\projectname\source\ ##avs, d2v, vobs
d:\projects\projectname\stills\ ##any stills i need to export for reuse
d:\projects\projectname\Adobe Preview Files\ ##preview files
d:\projects\projectname\AfterEffects\ ##anything i do in After Effects

Sharpen up the razor...

Put your clips, vobs, avs scripts, project files, etc. on another drive. Even the preview files can be on another drive if you like, although since they're so simple to recreate you may not want to bother. In fact it's generally a good idea to keep ANYTHING on a seperate drive. Just setup and keep a good directory structure or else things will get confusing as all hell quickly.

lol@cataclysm

Of course you only need to copy the project files to your D drive... why the hell wouldn't that work?[/i]
