sync problems when viewing in anything other than vdub

Post by norskotaku » Sun Feb 29, 2004 7:45 pm

this is an odd problem that has just popped up in the past couple weeks on my machines. in the past, I've encoded my videos with Xvid and watched them on windows media player (8) with no problems at all. suddenly, things aren't so friendly, and whenever I start a video, it skips around in the beginning. I can't quite describe what's going on, since it is different every time. it takes some random frames from a few seconds into the video, and sticks them at the beginning, then jumbles it up for a second or two before getting back to normal.

so I blamed media player and started opening my videos in winamp 5 instead. they started just fine, but then I get this odd feeling while watching them and realized the the audio and video aren't synced up. it's playing them with the video just a few frames behind where it should be, which is unacceptable, and makes lipsyncs just look sloppy.

at this point I was worried about my original encode, and quite frustrated, cause I KNEW I didn't do such a sloppy job of syncing things up. I open the same video in Vdub, and it runs perfectly. ?!? so what's going on? I tried uninstalling and reinstalling Xvid, but no difference. if it was working fine for months, why would it have a problem now? has anyone run into this before?

I get the same problem when I go from my fast work computer to my hatin' life home computer.
Try the obvious stuff first: defrag your HD, turn off all the junk in the background and so on. You can even try using smaller sizes to make test runs (you know, 512*384 instead of 720*480).

Luck.

thanks, but no difference there. both of my machines are in top shape, and have recently been redone anyway.

I did try encoding an mpeg to see how it did, and it ran fine in media player. I don't usually make mpegs unless I have to, so I'd rather not have to convert all my videos to that.

update: dl-ed the latest update of Xvid and it fixed the sync problems.

still have issues with the opening of each vid being messed up in windows media player, though.
