i see my understudy is making waves. i supose i should also comment here, as i am responcable for all this =P
i read most of this, and yes, its all opinions.
on the topic of why i make amvs, i used to do it for the thrill of just doing something with all my ideas, seeing them come to life in Premiere, the joy of just sitting back and watching something totaly amazing and say i made that. then i moved onto making AMVs with deeper meanings, and i think i was a bit of an over acheaver in that area, as no one has yet got the meaning of my Silent Dream and Goodbye Ryoko amvs, but oh well. now for the most part, i edit to please others. like any actor, i need my audence. i did the "oh im just doing this for myself, and if others like it good for them" bit, and it didnt sit well with my style. however i am turning over a new leef. i was once labeled the master of instomentals, i could shape the mood in a song with no words using only simple editing. now i want to take the world by suprize. if anyone hasent noticed, i havent made a new AMV in a wile, this is in part thanks to koop. Euphoria was just a desaster, and i still call it a failed AMV. yes, as flint said, he poured his heart and soul into that AMV, and the story is apsolutly stunning. but out of the 500 reviews, something like 10 actualy got it, the rest are OMGWTF that effect was aw$ome! he tryed to tell a story, no one is getting it, its a failed AMV. i am taking the lesson he taught me, and doing something new.
but as it has always been, the people watching will judge if anything is good.

OMG no!flint_the_dwarf wrote:That's basically what I'm saying. But I mean... even for my videos, very few people had anything particularly bad to say, but few people really saw what I put into it and it was disheartening. I guess to stop uploading my videos would be silly...well, we'll see.
ok yes, i didnt get the meaning of your war video, but your first one was OMG i still watch it, and the last one, your piano, albeit hard to watch more hten once at a time, is still VERY good. see, you know what i know, and what im teaching to crazy, that the mood and story are the meat of the AMVs, and you are a master of mood - to - clip placment and overall conseption abilities. dont stop uploading cuz a few nucker heads cant see past some effects, or bitch about not understanding it!

I'm going to throw in some thoughts from the other side of the spectrum than has already been presented.
Euphoria is the perfect example of a story video I just don't get, I know there's a story in it and I doubt I ever will really get it. Instead of seeing a meaningful story about Character X and Lady Y I'm sitting there mentally going "boy. girl. special effect. boy again. robot. boy." Koops story means nothing to me because the characters, scenes, and any lyric matching he did means nothing to me. Not only would I have to see whatever anime that was to get Koops video, I'd also have to like it in order to care about Koops story. I know the basics of DBZ but I don't give a damn so DBZ story vids don't do a thing for me even though I know the characters. Koop isn't the only example either, I personally find Arigatomyna to be someone who makes videos that don't interest me in the slightest because I don't like and don't watch the style of animes she does. I don't mean this as a slight on Arigatomyna or Koop, I actually think they're both quite talented, this is just a simple explanation of why their videos mean little to me despite their talent.
OTOH lets take Delicate Beauty. I've seen Eva and because of that the quotes used in it actually mean something. I thought it was a nice character profile but only because I knew the character long before seeing the video. If I hadn't seen Eva I'd be sitting there going "Girl. Flash. Girl again. Flash. Robot. Flash. Was he grabbing her tit? Flash." It was a well executed video but that's totally wasted on someone who has no idea who/what Rei is.
Now contrast that to effect videos. I haven't seen every anime used in Elvis vs Anime but it doesn't make a damned bit of difference because the video doesn't require knowing anything at all about the characters. It's simply a lighthearted dance video that is enjoyable even if you can't identify every source used. For that reason alone the majority of viewers will find it more entertaining and watchable than any of the videos mentioned above.
If you create story videos don't be discouraged if others don't get it, if anything that should be the expected norm. In my personal case, I made my Ghibli dance video to be enjoyable regardless of if the viewer has seen every Ghibli movie or none of them. OTOH my Kiki/The Craft trailer will only be entertaining to someone who knows both Kiki's Delivery Service and The Craft, anyone who isn't familiar with both will probably find it boring (this is of course assuming my videos are entertaining to anyone, which is an entirely different topic so nevermind). I knew that before I made it so the fact my trailer has had less hits, less downloads, no ops, and a lower star score than the Ghibli thing doesn't bother me at all; it's exactly what I expected. When you cut down your potential audience from 'everyone who watches AMVs' to 'everyone who has seen and liked this particular anime' of course there's going to be lots of people who don't get it. If you honestly make videos for yourself then just shurg your shoulders and go 'oh well'. If you make videos for others then keep to non-story videos, that's what will reach the most people.

Okay... but some people like to have to think when they watch videos. It gives them something to look for a second time. They don't have to see the anime, all the imagery is right there in front of you... you just need to interpret it. So you don't like to do that, and a lot of people don't like to... but some people do. And I think it's more gratifying to do something like that.
Dance videos are generally more appealing, but I don't care for them at all. One or two dance videos is all I ever need to see. If I'm in the mood for one, I'll watch one of those two. But drama and concept never gets old for me, as long as the exact same concept isn't repeated. I haven't seen at least 75% of the anime that is used in concept videos, but I love them anyway.
So it really just depends on the person, though I won't deny that dance videos are more appealing to the general population.

Yea, as a side note, I gotta commend that vid.godix wrote: Now contrast that to effect videos. The fact is, I've never seen the actual video it's based on

And I still enjoyed the hell out of it. Fun thing.
As for Flint's Rei video - well, I did say it was not cut out to be a popular vid due to the way it delivers its' message; but it's one I'll remember. And I think that's all that really counts.
The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying I like dance videos better (I tend towards comedy and experimental), just that they have a wider appeal. I think you're wrong on not having to see the anime to get story videos though. One of my favorite videos is Ermacs Soul of an Angel but anyone who hasn't seen Eva before just wouldn't get it even if they watched it fifty times in a row. The ironic humor of matching Shinji with some of the lyrics requires knowing the Shinji is, to put it nicely, a total putz. The meaning behind most of the song is totally lost unless you know what role Rei plays towards the end of the series. Even the simple matching of the lyric 'touched by an angel' requires knowing that those ugly things the giant robots fight are actually angels. The best anyone who doesn't have all that pre-knowledge can get is 'Wow, cool effects'. This doesn't mean the video wasn't very well done, it just means that many (perhaps even the majority) of the viewers just aren't going to get everything that was put in it.
Concept videos, just by the very nature of not following typical molds, are probably going to end up being simultaneously some of the most loved and most hated videos. Some people like experiments, some people want a video just like the others but with differenct scenes, and lets face it some experiements fail. Of all video types I expect experimental ones to be the least popular but the most highly ranked by their fans.
What prompted me to post was the comments on Koops disappointment and your apparent disappintment at how your videos are recieved. I don't know either of you and perhaps it isn't my place to say anything, but I gotta wonder what else was expected? It takes talent to make videos that have good effects so SFX fans like it and story good enough that drama fans like it. Rather than being disappointed that not everyone has seen the anime, thus not everyone got the story, you should both be proud that your videos work well on multiple levels. Most creators I've seen, myself included, can't combine elements nearly that well. We have to decide if we're doing an effects video or a drama video and then forget about any other aspect. Rather than thinking about quitting you should be encouraged that people like the video even if they don't get everything you put into it. Keep in mind that most videos aren't all that well liked even if the viewer gets everything we put into it.
