It means you don't have the proper codec required to play back the file.

I recommend getting ffdshow (can be found from the software page on EADFAG).

It means you tried to play a vid wmp couldn't handle. Unless it's an mpeg2 vid, you can probably fix it pretty easily - just get the 'Gordian Knot Codec Pack' - if it's an avi vid, that'll fix you up just fine.

The gordian knot codec pack doesn't have adware. It just has codecs and filters - it's an exe file, but all it installs are the codecs. If you want to know exactly what is in the pack, you can look on the doom page -
http://www.doom9.org
under 'downloads' it is the 'Gordian Knot Codec Pack' - it will give you a list of exactly what codecs/filters are installed when you run the exe file. You *can* download the pack from there - I just stopped giving out the link for that site because the mirrors seemed to fail a lot. :? It's the same pack as the site I linked, just a different place to download it from.

If by better you mean superfluous. :P I have yet to find a video that ffdshow's codecs can't play.

Really? It won't play mpeg2 encoded vids - not the ones I've downloaded off this site. Those only play in an old version of Winamp (1.87 - as apposed to 3.0). Nothing that ffdshow has solved for me.

Besides, huffyuv is a codec everyone should have - you never know when an amv watcher will turn amv-maker. And xvid/divx is all good and well - why not snag them?

So far I have run across a number of people for whom downloading ffdshow didn't solve the problem - but not one has downloaded this pack and reported a problem. Call it my cure-all. Better safe than sorry, and the 'superfluous' codecs don't hurt anything. ^_^

I just got tired of people who downloaded xvid, divx, ffdshow (one, not all) and *still* couldn't get the vids to play. With the pack - everything is covered and only those with an old version of wmp have problems (once you get the pack, it's easy to tell if it's a wmp problem rather than a real codec issue - that's the only thing the pack doesn't fix). It's just simpler.

[And unless I'm mistaken, I had *you* download this pack as well - back when you were having trouble with certain encoded videos. o.O ]

Oh, well, I guess I've just enver needed divx, xvid, or huffy because I've always got them. And I don't include mpeg2 because you first need a DVD drive, which isn't a codec issue.

And before, I didn't need that pack. All I needed was to update WMP and download the drivers for my video card. :? Now, all I have on my comp is ffdshow and the editing codecs.

Anyway, I didn't want to turn this into a debate. :?

Actually, Ari, the URL you pointed to includes the DivX Pro AdWare-version. So, it should say "AdWare Inside".
