haw much free space do i need to make a video?

Each project will need different HD space requirements. I say its safe to have about 100gb or better but you can use smaller if you take the steps of clipping the source to the scenes that you may use and discarding the scenes you know you dont want.

all depends on how much preplanning you like to do and preparing the source.

My first three videos were done with only 5 gig free space, which goes a long way towards explaining why they're so fairly short and poor quality (especially Lets Go Shopping, the longest of the three). So it is possible to do videos with little HD space but I wouldn't recommend it.

The other two videos were done on my new computer which has ~80 gig avalable for AMVs. I don't think I've used more than 50 gig at any one point though. It makes the process a lot quicker and a lot simpler.

Editing is torture without 40+GB. For me at least - editing on an iBook with FCP, using 0sex and MacMPEG2Decoder to dump to DV. I have no AVS ability, so I have to rip the DVD, then decode the M2V files to DV and put them on a network share someone's kindly set up with ~60G, then open them with QT and dump just the scenes I want from the files. My first video uses about 3-4GB now after cutting. The vid for AniMix will hopefully be much smaller. (Well, duh, it's all of 24 seconds...)

When I get my 1TB array set up, then I don't even need to worry anymore. I'll edit in uncompressed AVI 8) (And then I'll have a PC to do AVS, as well... whee multiplatform editing!) So really it's "the more the better", and you can never have enough. (Though 1TB does come close.

). I can rip several whole DVDs in MJPEG, and use them directly as sources for editing.

However, check my NTHT vid (link in my sig) and you'll see you can do <i>a lot</i> with 5 gigs.

Oh btw, I'm using MJPEG for editing, not DV, which I find much too limited (two settings: PAL/NTSC -- no other choices, two resolutions, two framerates). MJPEG with max quality is virtually lossless.

Really? Could you elaborate? Specifically, how do you do IVTC on a Mac?

And you can do way more than two framerates with DV, I believe the spec for 24p video was released recently, and FCP handles it. But IVTC is what I need. Any suggestions, or should I just wait until I can use my PC for the ripping step?

If you're using PAL DVDs as sources, there's no need to IVTC, you just have to tell the MJPEG encoder that it's interlaced video (and then to tell it again to FCP in the properties of each file you import -- do not deinterlace: if FCP knows it's interlaced video, it'll do all the job for you).

I've never ripped NTSC DVDs, so for them I can't say...

(24fps film -> 25fps PAL involves no telecining, the movie is just played 1/24th faster in video and nobody notices anything. Still, since it's PAL, it's interlaced.)

Yeah? I have always had colour problems with MJPEG, maybe it's the codecs I tried (Morgan and PicVideo) but even at 100% it just looks wrong – everything looks a little washed out.

I'm using QuickTime MJPEG.
