my pc's sound is echoing

ok ever since i made a clean install of winxp(pro) a few days ago (due to some shit anoying virus) ive had a realy anoying problem with the sound coming out of my speakers (crapy 2.0 set from JBL that came with my old compaque pc, but they did their job without any problems for 2 years). everytime i play certian songs (or when ya hear that noise that ya hear when ya double click and open a folder in windows) i get a realy anoying echo (which seems a bit distorted). ive got onboard 6 chanel ac97, please help

try reinstalling the ac97 audio codec and your drivers. also hit advanced under the master volume bar. and see if u have stero echo on or something like that. my old comp had that setting and it created an echo this comp dont have it. also go to the contorl pannel speaker setup then audio then advanced under the sound playback and make sure u have the correct speakers selected and check the preformace tab set hardware acceleration on full and sample rate conversion on good
