That was Mr. John Cage which was discussed above :?

Musique Concrete

He also tinkered with instruments, especially pianos. The guy even converted a piano into what is essentially the world's first drum machine!

I believe he is also the composer behind the worlds longest symphony, which is being played out over the span of years at an art gallery I'm too lazy to look up.

You may consider 4:33 to be pretentious nonsense, but Cage was quite possibly the most creative musician ever.
If nothing else, harsh noises get your attention.

Hell, if this guy is usually called 'the father of avant-garde', it's utterly impossible for me to have anything against him; especially considering that I'm a self-professed avant-garde rock fan.

its minimalism, the art of removing all of one's percievable emotions in order to truely express one's self

Yes, anyone could have. But John Cage is the one who actually did it. He had the guts to get up there, sit down at the piano, not play a note for 4 minutes and 33 seconds, and then stand up and leave, despite knowing that he may get laughed at.

Which goes to show, it is not what one can do.

It is what one does.

It's not actually 4 and half moments of straight silence.

It's a full piece of music with several rests, all of which add up to 4:33 if put together.
