I've got a similar idea close in the queue though, Argent Soma using Evergrey's "Different Worlds" (from the _In Search of Truth_ album). Pure psychological torture and existential angst.
Nice, I just bought In Search of Truth two weeks ago and I love it. Bought it along with 8 other CDs. Different Worlds is such a sad song, I rank it up there with Trilogy of the Damned for Evergrey's greatest emotional songs.
Damn, I didn't remember that. :x

I'm sure it's completely moot by this point, but I just remembered:

Switchblade Symphony

It's more on the industrial/techno side than Evanescence, but Tina Root has a voice to die for. Clown is one of their best.
If nothing else, harsh noises get your attention.

It may be late, but has ANYONE heard Elegia by New Order?
It starts off slow and quiet and builds up. It completely instrumental and quite good for mid '80s (1985)
I also made a vid with it to Spirit of Wonder (the first OVA), and its probably the only vid to use that song on the entire Org. :?

I don't know about soft, but what about some songs from Orgy's new album Punk Statik Paranoia?

Make up your mind

Make up your mind

You couldn’t make me
Anymore crazy
Than I could stand to be

So won’t you just sympathize with me
And all the things I do to make you angry with me
What’s wrong with me today
You say, I leave you all alone
Every time you call me
As if you needed reason to fall down
I know this must be hard for you to understand
And all this waiting takes too long for me
Make up your mind

You don’t even know, what’s good for you
You better keep your eyes on me
Maybe you’re oblivious inside
And it’s scary that you don’t know
Your chances fade away
Fade away sometimes
Maybe you’re oblivious inside

No you can’t deny me
And I don’t want to see you go away

You get angry when I ask what’s on your mind
I should have been asking you what’s been up your sleeve this whole time
‘Cause now I know you’re dangerous
And I know you’re dangerous, but somehow you’re contagious
Make up your mind

You don’t even know, what’s good for you
You better keep your eyes on me
Maybe you’re oblivious inside
But it’s scary that you don’t know
Your chances fade away
Fade away sometimes
Maybe you’re oblivious inside

You don’t even know, what’s good for you
You better keep your eyes on me
Maybe you’re oblivious inside
But it’s scary that you don’t know
Your chances fade away
Fade away sometimes
Maybe you’re oblivious inside

No you can’t deny me
No you can’t deny me
‘Cause I don’t want to see you go away

You don’t even know, what’s good for you
You better keep your eyes on me
Maybe you’re oblivious inside
But it’s scary that you don’t know
But it’s scary that you don’t know
Your chances fade away
Fade away sometimes
Maybe you’re oblivious inside

It's more like lost love, but this is an excellent song(and who knows, it might fit what you're looking for):

Pure

Don’t you bring me down
Kick me when I’m down

Put me away again
Every now and then
Your bottle spinning my fate
As I hold my breath
And you say you don’t want any part of this now
Where did it go so wrong

I guess I’m finally finding out
It’s got me tripping now
The little things, everywhere I go
It’s such a shame
Why you held on, so long
Why don’t you confuse me a little more?
Confuse me

And I never thought that you
Who would believe that I wasn’t good enough?
Those things I never thought you’d do
You got the best of me

You got the best of me, when you said you didn’t love me anymore
And I know, this will be the last time

You’ve got me, running in circles like a freak
So why do you try, to kick me when I’m down
I’m down, all the way down

Put me away again
Every now and then
Your bottle spinning my fate
While I hold my breath
Don’t sweat the lies that you say I control
Confuse me a little more
(Confuse me)

And I never thought that you
Who would believe that I wasn’t good enough?
Those things I never thought you’d do
You got the best of me
You and all your secrets don’t need me
You got the best of me, when you said you didn’t love me anymore
And I know, this will be the last time
You’ve got me, running in circles like a freak
So why do you try to, kick me when I’m down
I’m down

So when you say you’ve let me go, let me go
‘Cause you didn’t care about this, sorry you
I guess you’ll be all right
Now that you’ve got things to go your way

How could you be like this?
This it the last time but you don’t hear me though

You got the best of me, when you said you didn’t love me anymore
And I know, this will be the last time
You’ve got me, running in circles like a freak
So why do you try to, kick me when I’m down
I don’t understand the way
That you’re thinking, thinking, Andrea

Who could believe that I wasn’t good enough?
Who could believe that I wasn’t good enough?
Confuse me a little more
Who would believe that I wasn’t good enough?
Who could believe that I wasn’t good enough?

And was it Inu Yasha you were doing the songs to? (if not i don't know what gave mw the idea) The above song might work well with a InuYasha and Kikyo relationship vid.

Both these songs and others from the album have downloadable clips at The Official Site

FIONA APPLE - really haunting at times, and definately capable of being sweet, bitter, fast, slow, seductive, angsty, and all sorts of bipolar pairs of emotions.

BAUHAUS - the first well-known goth group (that i'm aware of). more dark than angry, though their songs don't always seem very serious or self-important (by goth standards, at least).

THE MISFITS - everyone's favorite horror-flick obsessed punk group. one of the "big three" defining groups in early punk (along with their predecessors, the Ramones and the Sex Pistols). a far cry from Evenescene in both sound and attitude (the Misfits were also, in a way, the punk equivalent of KISS or Alice Cooper, so they've always stuck to material at home in a drive-in showing of a b-movie).

SARAH BRIGHTMAN - classically trained singer, played Christine in The Phantom of the Opera for some time, has produced several albums blending pop and classical music and making use of her incredably sweet and airy soprano. Since her albums are of considerably varying quality, I'd suggest La Luna or Eden as a place to start.

HILARY HAHN - not a vocalist, but her violin performances match the description of what you like about Evenescene, while offering quite a bit more (not insulting Evenescenece, they're pretty good as contemporary pop groups go, but there's no comparison with the depth offered by classical music. of course, there was a lot of crap floating about when classical music was the contemporary pop music, but a couple hundred years will really separate the mediocre from the masterpieces). i personally recommend the Mendelssohn/Shostakovich and Barber/Meyer concerto albums.

THE ZOMBIES - not female, not goth (believe it or not) or even psuedo-goth, but a british group from the 60's with an impressive knack for weaving beautiful harmonies and creating moving songs posessing both simplicity and depth. some of their better known songs are "time of the season", "beechwood park", "summertime", and "time won't let me" - though my personal favorite would be "a rose for emily" from the album "Odyssey and Oracle".

V.A.S.T. (Visual Audio Sensory Theatre) - a one-man group somewhere between Moby and Nine Inch Nails (though the two seem to grow more similar with time). excellent synthesizer arrangements, creative sound canvas, damn good songwriting to wrap this curtain of sound around, and lyrics similar to but a bit more profound than Evenscence, on about the same level as NIN, and not quite at that of mid-career Pink Floyd - which brings me to:

PINK FLOYD - the ultimate example of contemporarary songwriting. Black Sabbath and Jethro Tull win the awards, in my book, for best demonstration of collective instrumental talent, but Roger Waters was definately the master lyricist and Floyd's songs really dig in and work with the emotions they are meant to convey. not much in their reperetoir concerning failed relationships and the like (One Of My Turns and Don't Leave Me Now serving as exceptions), but death, madness, fascism, war, the loss of innocence, loneliness, greed, and a few happier topics like high-flying albatrosses and girls who are "often inclined to borrow someone else's dreams for tomorrow" all lie well within their domain.

SARAH MCLAUGHLIN - some really soft, soothing or haunting songs (ex. Adia), some pretty angry aggressive ones (ex. My God), nice voice, generally acoustic instrumentation.
may seeds of dreams fall from my hands -
and by yours be pressed into the ground.

I've got two perfect Evanescence songs for you to fit that together!

They're some of their older ones though, they're called "You" and "Forgive Me", hope that helps?
