it all depends.
So in other words, one part of the community is waging war on another part of the community because they take their community seriously enough to want to do so. Then they tell the powerless side to get over the loss cause it's just an online community. I'm glad people make so much sense." -- Tab

Philosophy of AMV Creation

Post by paulrowe » Wed Feb 11, 2004 4:56 am

Personally, I think if you're going to run with an idea, especially if it is an original idea, you should put a lot of effort into it. Granted, I haven't made a whole lot of videos, but that's because I wouldn't settle for a half-cooked video.

I like an original idea, but don't tend to appreciate it much if I have to rivet myself to the seat just to watch the whole thing through. I'd rather have the video rivet me, you know?

They aren't necessarily mutually exclusive.

Doki Doki's videos = high originality plus good execution

I try to come up with an original idea and develop it to the extent that it can't have bad execution (outside of potential encoding issues in the final product). I've been learning to solve the encoding issues, but part of the reason why I haven't produced a vid since October is I haven't had an original enough idea hit me since then to develop. I think I may have just come up with another one though, I'm currently fleshing out the timechart in Excel to measure it's practicality...

if it's gotta be one or the other
i choose execution.

I'd rather see a well done Linkinball Z action video than a video that is thematically novel but impossible to follow or understand.

What he said.

No, it's not "self-explanatory," and "constructive arguments" about what? They're two criteria for AMVs. And?

"Timing and sound quality. Self-explanatory. Discuss."

I saw a video once that was just a fight scene from a DBZ movie set to upbeat fun music, but it was executed really well, was paced nicely, flowed with the music, and was a lot of fun to watch.

I also once saw a video that had an interesting idea but was executed in such a way as to be horrendously boring and dull.

Where am I going with this? I dunno, but I am in class and should probably be working right now and not foruming, so draw your own conclusions.

original ideas with crap execution can actualy turn out good. take for example my corupting religion amv. while technicaly its absolute crap (average sound and wierded video interlacing issues) and while the execution itself aint so good, alot of people have actualy liked it alot, more than anything because the idea just had a realy high level of originality. then again, this is a one off thing that barely ever happens. but as waren spector (director of iron storm, great overlord of development od deaus ex 2 and thief 3) one said (actualy its part of the "iron storm manifesto" )
"id rather aim for the stars and fail miserably then rehash the same old idea's"
. beautiful stuff

I would suppose that you really cant put them against each other though....I mean there is original crap (Euphoria) and then there is good executed crap (Engel) But this is my opinion on the matter....I like to make my videos simple and straight forward....but this is just me
