Escaflowne Anime vs. Manga

I went to Barnes and Noble and I scaned through the manga for Escaflowne. WOW...I was kind of shocked. Aren't most anime series based off of manga? The characters looked completely different. For example, Hitomi in the manga was a girl with long black and glasses. Hitomi in the anime was a girl with short blonde hair and NO glasses. Van, ...and pretty much every other character looked different too with the exception of Alan. The storyline seemed a BIT altered but looked the same for the most part. So...anyone wanna tell me what they think of this?

A lot of times, the manga of a certain anime series is more indepth and is usually better than the tv-series. I would have to agree, because a lot of the mangas i've read so far, like Love Hina, Ah! My goddess, Naruto, etc.. they all have been a bit or a whole lot better. I guess its because the tv-series, the producer can only do so much with the amount of money they have and the amount of time they have to finish the series. It all depends on a lot of factors and it doesnt surprise me that the manga is better than the anime series ... or wat ever...

Yeah, I saw the covers for the Esca manga as well. I thought that the manga may of come out after the anime, like Bebop did (thought I heard this) but even if it didn't the TV Hitomi looks better.

I've never liked it when they change characters' appearances. For the most part, it's just hair and eye color...the rest of their appearance remains the same and most people actually don't mind because manga is black and white anyway, so you don't give it much thought. But going from a girl with long black hair and glasses to a girl with short blond hair and no glasses?! I guess they wanted to make her more attractive to male audiences.

I have the third and fourth volume of the Escaflowne manga (can't find 1-2 yet,) and ya it's VERY different....I won't go into plot, but apparently it starts off the same, according to Propyro, but then as it progresses it gets steadily different. That manga is the most Shonen styled it could be, filled with gratuitous swearing/boob shots, but except for the strange art, *DID you SEE DILANDAU

???!!!???!!!* I am intrigued by the storyline. I'm going to pursue getting the rest of the series but ya...it's different. Apparently, there's a Shojo version of Escaflowne too, it's 2 volumes I think, but I don't believe it has been licensed. Anyone know more about that?

My sister and I just glanced over the Escaflowne manga and noticed the considerable amount of differences. This is one of the manga series StreetFuryX wants (I think she also wants the Full Metal Panic manga).

Hmm...birthday present perhaps?

That's no surprise, because the Escaflowne manga is drawn by Katsu Aki of Futari Etchi fame.

They do that?! Make shonen AND shojo versions of certain mangas? Oh man, I didn't know that! Imagine if it's a really long manga...that would cost so much!

Shonen and shojo are tow different manga styles. Shojo is obviously geared more towards males, usually containing...ah...well-endowed girls (as Moonlight mentioned) and more action, less cutesy stuff. An example might be something like Eva. Shojo manga is geared towards females, with characters with big cutesy eyes. An example would be anything by CLAMP pretty much with the exception of X.
