Real Time Playback

Post by Surgical~Shotgun » Sun Feb 01, 2004 10:21 pm

Whenever I preview complex music videos I'm editing, the video always skips.

Is there any hardware or even software that would solve this problem? RAM? CPU?

I'd apreciate any help.

CPU. If your CPU isn't powerful enough previewing will be a bitch. I used to preview knowing full well the end result will look smoother. If I needed to see exactly how accurately I hit something I'd export and look at it in media player.

Does 3.4 GHz sound good? I think it just came out.

yeah, 3.4Ghz should preview anything you throw at it. Can you give us a little more detail such as what programs you are using, codecs etc. Also how much RAM you have would be nice.

Unlikely. I'm using a 2.53 GHz P4 with 1 GB of RAM, and any more than two or three effects will slow down the realtime previews. Depends on which effect(s) and how many; also on the preview screen size.

The computer I plan to get:
- 1+ GB of RAM
- Use Adobe Premeire
- Maybe a real time editing card (don't know much about them).
- RADEON 9800 All-In-Wonder Pro
- 10,000+ RPM hard drive.
I don't know what codec is (I'm still kinda new to video editing). If there's a certan motherboard you guys could recommend, I'd apreciate the advice.

Note:
I was editing video on my friends Dell that had:
- 2.8 GHz
- 512 MB RAM
- RADEON 9800
- Using Windows Movie Maker (unfortunatly).
Despite these powerful specs, I encountered problems like: whenever I set only the music track to play, both the video's track and the music track would play, and the video would skip whenever I added fade effects.

Basically, I want to be able to make videos as complex as seen in the Animix.
I've been told that Macs are good for video editing. But also that they lack features as in PCs.

Your setup sounds fine to me, but if premiere does get laggy trying to preview in real time, just hit enter to render the preview. Also you will want to read A&E's Technical Guides to All Things Audio and Video You can find all you need to know there.

I don't know how Windows Movie Maker does previews, but if it's anything like Premiere, you shouldn't be having skips with computer specs like that unless:

1) There is a lot of spyware installed on the computer that is taking up resourses.
2) You have the incorrect "preview codec" chosen (MJPEG is the best). Also note that this is a setting in Premiere I am talking about, but I am hoping WMM also has something like that. Basically if the codec you're previewing in is pretty complex, it'll obviously slow things down.

As Tarant has said, with a few effects it does slow down, but again, if it's like Premiere's preview, you should be fine since Premiere can preview without the effects in it (unless you scroll with the "alt" button held) and be "real-time."

Hope that helps!
