Ah, I see how it works now...So what I'm taking from this is that if you're intending to just keep things digital then it should be resized to 3:4, right? Should one also do this if they're intending to export their AMVs back to DVD (ie. for con submissions, TV viewing, etc.)?

It's safe to use, I think.
Argh, I meant to write this a long time ago.

It's safe to use, but not 100% correct. The thing still needs to consider cropping, and the pixel aspect ratio values for NTSC video are mismatched (it shouldn't be 72:79).

Basically, if you use the thing, you can expect acceptable results, but they won't be spot-on -- there will be some small amount of error. If this matters to you, don't use it until the bugs are worked out :P

Whoa, the rar blows up with a ton of corrupt headers, but the files seem to unpack okay anyway.

I'll toy around with this as a substitute for staring at xvid code all day. At least Java I can read :|

@trythil - maybe you could use the moon footage from your esca sources to work out PAR. I'm presuming that the moon in Esca should be a perfect circle, so you could try and use that principle to check resizing :)

Hey, that's not a bad idea :) I'll probably use a variant on that and use the standard circle-in-the-middle setup, though -- the moon in Escaflowne *may* be a perfect circle but there's just too many things in it to distract me :P

I prefer a resolution of 592x320 for my 1.85:1 sources and 752x320 for my 2.35:1 sources. I've yet to work extensively with anything else, but if I ever need to encode at 16:9 then I'll choose a multiple of 256x144.

After cropping, of course.
Ask me about my secret stash of videos that can't be found anywhere anymore.
