If you like random funniness then "Excel Saga" is definately for you although, seeing a few key animes and movies is recommended before.
"Neon Geneis Evangelion" is for all the people of the world that love all the blue haired, red eyed, bio-mechanical, masturbating, red-haired annoying German, Fucked-up ending animes out there. (Also, check out "RahXephon" if you want a slightly toned-down version of the above).
"Dragon Ball Z" if you love fighting with out any plot and simply want to listen to ARGH!!! (or kk-kkkkk-kkkk/haaaaaaa!!!! if the japanese version) ages.
For the boyfriend who wants his girlfriend to get into anime, but you still want that level of action that will keep you awake check out "Escaflowne", very good mecha fight scenes, solid plot, romance that will bring a tear to your eye and music to die for.
On the movies side I highly recommend "Akira", "Escaflowne: The Movie" (controversial I know, but still good if you haven't seen the series) and "Metropolis". Two not to buy that may look good are "Blood: The Last Vampire" and "X:The Movie".
If you're looking for FanSubs I highly recommend "(Shingetsutan) Tsukihime" and "GetBackers". Also check out Naruto; I haven't seen it but a lot of people seem to like it.
I think that should help you out.
