Indeed.

And yes, scaring people is fun.

Technically, the first anime I was a fan of was Science Ninja Team: Gatchaman... which came to America as Battle of the Planets...

However... back then, I didn't get the idea of "Japanese Animation." Animation was animation. Howevr... it was Yamato (which came to America as Star Blazers) that made me an anime fan.

I admit... when my family moved to Canada, my father bought satelite tv and when we were all surfing the channels my dad came upon Digimon. I was always interested in animated stuff (I was only five back then) so I started watching all sorts of anime that was showing on satelite (ytv, teletoon, etc.) like Pokemon, Digimon, Monster Ranchers, etc. Yeah....

It was Princess Mononoke and Fushigi Yuugi.

PM was the first anime (movie or series) I saw that was not on Cartoon Network so animated violence at the level was unknown to me....kinda took me by surprise. Great movie though.

Fushi Yuugi was my first uncensored, honest-to-goodness, saw the whole series anime.

So wait... how old are you now?

I could be off on my reckoning, of course, but I thought the Pokemon craze really kicked off about... maybe six years ago now. Granted, it takes some time for a series to make it over here, so Pokemon itself is probably somewhat older. And the craze may have started while I was in middle school and not while I was in High School like I thought (there have been too many crazes for me to keep track--who here remembers Beanie Babies and Tickle Me Elmos?). But if my six year guess is right, then that puts you at about eleven right now...
