I offer you the joys of urban dictionary. Though you realize Otaku isn't really a 'good' label in Japan...it's actually more of an insult.

otaku

Otaku is the honorific word of Taku (home).

Otaku is extremely negative in meaning as it is used to refer to someone who stays at home all the time and doesn't have a life (no social life, no love life, etc)

Usually an otaku person has nothing better to do with their life so they pass the time by watching anime, playing videogames, surfing the internet (otaku is also used to refer to a nerd/hacker/programmer).

In the Western culture, people confuse otaku to be something positive like "Guru". If you think about it, it's not really good to be called a guru if it means you are a total loser who can't socialize with other people except through the Internet.

Other Japanese words which have been confused by Westerners also include but not limited to: Anime, Manga, etc

otaku no jinsei ha yabai na! (it sucks to live the life of an otaku!)

When Japanese girls can look at you and the fallowing conversation happens:
‹Which one do you think is the Otaku?› Minako asked Sakamae, in a quiet voice.

‹Eh, otaku?› Rina tilted her head, never having heard the term applied to Americans.

‹You know, the otaku, there's always one, who thinks all we do is watch animation and eat ramen while learning about giant robots.› Answered Minako.

‹Probably that one.› Sakamae point down to the group. ‹The twitchy one, in the ‘Rei Ayanami’ t-shirt.›

‹Should we tell him that Sailor Moon doesn’t live here?› Suggested Minako with a wicked, sarcastic grin.

‹And ruin his hopes and dreams? Minako, deary, could we be so cruel?›

You are an otaku when your life revolves around anime. When the most important thing in your life is anime. When you find yourself immersed in anime related activities (like making amvs) and prefer it to doing something like being social. When you think about anime in some form or another all throughout the day. When it has gotten to the point that it is a disease. And yet you love the disease, and hope to never be cured.

But then we'd need an "Otaku<b>sub</b>" thread. :P
