DVD Authoring question

Post by TokyoU15 » Wed Jan 07, 2004 12:12 am

I just recently compiled and burned my first DVD on Ulead DVD Workshop. Now, it played fine on my stand alone DVD player, but when I tried playing it on my PS2, it gave me a "Disc Read Error".

If it matters any, my media is DVD+R. My question is, is there a certain way to have it play on PS2's and a wider range of dvd players, or is it simply a DVD+R compatibility issue?

Also, I tried having audio on the menu, but when I tried to burn it, it gave me this error saying that "MPA audio is not compatible with NTSC DVD's" or something along those lines. I really want audio on my DVD menu's, so I was wondering what format do I have to convert the audio to?

P.S. Sorry if this is in the wrong forum, but I was kinda confused as to where it went. Wasn't sure if I should put it on Video Software Help or General Video.

*checks a user compability list*

It seems to ge generally compatable with DVD-R and DVD+R, perhapps your media is unique and unplayable. The different dyes used to make the disk effect the way the laser is reflected. In the case of earlier single laser DVD players many CD-Rs were 'invisable' to the player. Most DVD players and DVD-Roms have two different lasers to ensure compatability.

Try a different brand of disk.

It can also depend on the 'generation' of you PS2. My friends tell me I have a 2nd generation PS2. I got it just over a year ago. Supposedely, the first generation PS2 does not recognize burned discs. The second generation is more tolerant. The third current generation is more sensitive in order to crack down on piracy from China.

My PS2 does play DVD-Rs I made using DVD Movie Factory.

ack! DVD+R media is really expensive. I guess I'll try another brand.
Which one would you recommend? I checked the link you gave me, and pretty much nothing seems to be compatible with a PS2. I'll take a closer look at the list later (when I'm not so sleepy).

Narcted, I'm not quite sure which version (or generation as you put it) PS2 I have, but I got it last year, so it might be the latest one, unless they came out with a new version recently.

For now, I'll try different media.

Thanks for the replies, I appreciate the help.

That list is written by end users mostly, so take it with a grain of salt.

For instance, some will say it can't play Divx, others know HOW to make it play divx. Though it can't do it 'naturally'.

There were false claims about my DVD playere there too, it DOSN'T play SVCD/CVD subtitles, and it DOSN'T play multi-audio track SVCD/CVDs, but some people said it did.

Yeah, I don't quite understand what my gamer friends were explaining either.

I should think that +R would be more likely to work in PS2, since Sony was one of the developers of the +R format. I only burn -R and I don't really have a lot of trouble. If it helps, these are the discs I use. They are kinda purple. (and cheap)

I’ve personally made over 50 dvd’s and all the ones I’ve tried on the ps2 work fine. I also always use DVD-R media because it has the highest compatibility. TDK has the best compatibility record with me and I recommend it to anyone.
Your problem could be your authoring program. I’ve never used Uled before so I can’t help you there. I use ReelDVD, it’s a bit expensive but you can get it cheap if you look for it bundled with a burner.

I recently tried these discs and found them quite compatible. They are currently on sale and $19.99 for 25 4x DVD-R is WOW!

Thanks for the suggestions Zanedomain and Narcted, but unfortunatly my Burner doesn't support DVD-R media, only DVD+R.

I'll search for other brands of DVD+R (I'll try those brands you guys mentioned).

Thanks again.
