By the way, the true AR of the animatrix is 2.35:1, as you can see if you crop the letterboxing on those 16:9 dvd images. The largest res you're going to get is 848x352 and even that's going to take a bit of cropping pre-resize to get real 2.35:1 out of.

Ehm... So what would be the best approach if I want to edit an anamorphic anime in its correct aspect ratio? The online version is going to be 640x352, but for cons I need a 720 pixels wide version too. Is resizing to 960x480 for editing really a no-no in spite of what the guides say?

Edit it anamorphic and resize later...

960x480 is fine, I've edited like that many a time, but it always requires a 2nd resize.

The problem is not that people don't understand what anamorphic footage is. My point is why resize twice? Why are we resizing up to 960x480? How is it better than resizing down?

If it was my project and I had a anamorphic DVD, I would crop/resize down to an actual aspect ratio and edit from there. This would save time and in my mind, resizing down saves image quality over resizing up.

* No one is going to download a 960x480 video.
* Editing @ 960x480 will only add to the time it takes to process effects/encode.
* 960x480 is not even the proper aspect ratio of the anamorphic footage and thus you'll need to resize and crop anyways, afterwards. Any effects you have applied @ that point will not be squished. Such as a circle being stretched into an oval...

Also the majority of people here will not be outputing to an analog format. Many cons take digital formats. Many cons are still using 4:3 display devices, so your video would be letterboxed no matter what, though you could reencode your video anamorphically even still after editing @ the proper aspect ratio.

Thus, I think it's best you resize to the correct aspect ratio before you edit your video.

You could suggest to use Premiere's pixel aspect ratio setting, however that option is not available in all editing software and I wouldn't trust Premiere's resizing...

One question...why resize down before editing? One would think they'd like their 'master' copy to remain anamorphic when the project is done. They can go make a letterboxed copy later if they wish to send it to a con. o.O
