The Last Unicorn

Post by anneke » Tue Dec 30, 2003 4:08 pm

Is the Last Unicorn considered Anime or not?

There are debates to both sides of this issue.

This should be probably be in the General Anime forum. Last time I checked The Last Unicorn is considered anime, and I think I saw an AMV to it once...

If its reasonably debatable, then I think there should be no problem if you are wanting to put it on the donut or whatever.

I'd be surprised if it were; it's based on a book in English and was originally released in English... unless there's something else about its production that I don't know. :?

The crew/cast list for "The Last Unicorn (1984)" can be found here. Several Japanese names are listed for the animation effort.

Side note: it appears that a remake is planned for Christmas 2004 release. According to the cast list, Christopher Lee will reprise his role in the first movie, but Mia Farrow will be playing Molly instead of the unicorn.

More news about the new movie here. Looks like it's going to be live-action, but it's hard to tell just from the storyboards.

Thanks for the info. And many non-anime forms of animation are animated somewhere or other in Asia, so I wouldn't go by that. But if anime = "somebody in Japan had something to do with this in any way" to you, then to you it's anime. 8)

Good question. I'll just call it an animated movie with some Japanese crew/cast members.
Who cares if it's call anime by us, it's still a movie I love.
...yeaah.
There were some pics of it with Japanese written stuff on them...
Could be pages from a Japanese magazine, or something else more important. Anyway.
Who cares if it's Japanese, let's just call it an animated movie.

I'd love to see a new version of this great movie...but rather a new animated one (with better drawings) instead of a live-action movie. The majority of live-action movies with animated origin were crap.
At least the ones based on manga/anime.
Examples? Wicked City, Fist of the North Star, Lupin III, City Hunter, Sailor Moon (*shudder*), Street Fighter...etc.
And have you seen the first promo-shots for the upcoming DBZ-Movie??? *yuck*
Inuyasha: You're right. Kikyo was cuter. Much cuter.
