animatrix

Post by Tash » Mon Dec 29, 2003 1:36 am

I'm putting the animatrix dvd in premiere right now. I have resolutions at 944x360. Is this gonna work? If not whats the best for that dvd, with correct aspect ratio.

If you're using PAL, its 720*576. If you're using NTSC, its 720*480. Correct the aspect ratio in VDub later on, seeing as its anamorphic. Changing the framesize of a dvd without deinterlacing first will fuck the footage up, unless you stretch it horizontally only, in which case you'll hog alot of processing power.

IIRC, the Animatrix DVD is encoded anamorphically. (I don't have it handy, but I'm fairly sure that's correct.)

If it is anamorphic:
The correct resizing parameters are dependent upon what you want to do. If you plan to send the finished AMV to, say, a U.S. convention, probably the best way to handle this is to resize to 720x360 and add black space to bring it back up to 720x480. Doing that will ensure that the correct 16:9 aspect ratio is maintained on an NTSC 4x3 projection system, which is what most U.S. conventions use.

Obviously, you should take care of telecining/interlacing issues before resizing.

If you're planning for online distribution then you can safely ignore all this or resize -- it doesn't much matter. Resizing allows you to more easily integrate custom graphics at the correct aspect ratio, but you can do that without resizing the footage. In this case, assuming my target container had no aspect ratio information (i.e. AVI), I'd resize to 872x480, assuming the DVD was 16:9.

I might as well plug this AR calculator, too. Don't trust it too much, but I think it works.

(watch as ErMaC, Tab, AD, etc. prove me wrong :P )

But 720x360 is not correct for it. I don't know much about dvds but this one looks like its 720x2**

I also used Force Film since it said FILM progressive in dvd2avi.

LanczosResize(960,480)
Crop(8,60,-8,-60)

Can I use that?

It seems to be correct.

Yes, The Animatrix was 2.11:1 Anamorphic, not 16:9 Anamorphic. Resising it to 640x360 would not be the correct aspect ratio, everything would still look longer then it is wide.

New resolution is 944x367, from croping out all the black. Or do I not wanna do that?

640x272 is probably the final output res (distro) you'd want for your video. Other than that, just edit it in the res it is and deal with it later, unless your planning on altering the footage a bunch and need a better representation of the picture's size.

Editing at that a high a res is a bad idea because you're interpolating information up. Not to mention it will take longer to render effects at that resolution.

Resize it down to what Jebadia says and then go from there... There is no reason to upsample it like that.

Oh and you do not want to have odd numbered height or width values. It's even better if you can get each number to be divisable by 16 or atleast 8.
