DVD data rate

I've been playing around finally with trying to burn my videos to dvd. Problem is, it claims that a lot of my vids (actually I think all) have a data rate that is too high. (is there such a thing?)

Should I get a different program to do this with, or should I re-encode my mpeg2's with a lower bitrate, and if so, what bitrate should it be? (mine where encoded on Constant Quality 100%, Max bit 12000, Min bit 4000)

Unless I am mistaken, DVD players arent meant to handle 10k total (for audio and video.) so if you drop it down to the 9k range max (and if you're despirate, lower the audio bitrate.) you should do ok.

The total is 9.8mbs per sec and that include all audio and subtitle streams.

Which is why HiBit and DTS should not appear in the same description

I concur. The max design rate for DVD is 9.8 Mbits/sec. Most DVD authoring software won't go that high unless you customize it to. What authoring software are you using?

DVD Movie Factory 2.0 that I use usually will output DVDs at variable 8000 kbits/sec max as a default. This will accurately duplicate the quality of DV taken from a digital camcorder and holds about 1 hour of video. Movie Factory is great in that it will convert most video files to a compliant mpeg II format for use on DVD. Most users would only change the bitrate if they needed to fit more video on the disc or setting constant to handle lots of motion/scene changes. I'd recommend a bitrate between 4-8 kbits/sec.

Rule of thumb: 8000 kbits/s will give you about 1 hours worth. Raising or lowering the bit rate by 1000 takes or gives you 15 minutes. Ex. 6000 kbits is 90 minutes, 4000 kbits 120 minutes, etc.

Btw I'm using the software my burner came with called MyDVD.

Also, I used Tmpge to encode my mpeg2's
