Quicktime users don't need IVTC?

While messing around today, I discovered something abut Quicktime's MPEG-2 extension. If you rip a progressive DVD, the 3:2 pulldown tags are still included. But when opening the video in Quicktime Player with the MPEG-2 extension, it ignores the flags, providing nice 23.976fps video with no extra work. From there you can transcode it to an editing codec. Of course, if the video itself is not progressive, it does 29.97fps interlaced like normal.

Don't know if it works with other video editing programs besides Quicktime Player/Editor. Anyone else who has some other editing programs want to try it out? I'd assume it does this same thing on both Macintosh and Windows.

Yeah, but hardly any anime have RFF/TFF flags.

The guide method for PCs details this. You'd have to IVTC if you had pretty much any TV series.

Well from your description it looks like you're working with progressive source, which would not be telecined in the first place. Just flags would be placed so that the player would telecine it on the fly.

So, not having to IVTC, not telecined material is kinda m00t.

Most anime is telecined and needs to be IVTC'd.
