Just a Comment....

Post by Bahnhof™ » Tue Dec 23, 2003 8:41 pm

Ok. After Subjecting My First AMV I totally understand poeple may or may not like it. Tho I only have one op on here, friends and others I've sent the vid to have given me great comments and suggestions. One thing I noticed to be rather (iritatingly) consistant tho is that they when they say "it kinda doen't really fit the video" wat they really mean is "its not literal enough".
Now I don't know about the rest of you, i can't download AMV here yet, but I graduated Illustration. You learn how to express visual interpretation bot literally and conceptually. I mean no offence to this and in some case it works, but making a video of a girl lying in a "field of paper flowers" when those specific lyrics come up isn't my idea of good visual expression. its too literal, poeple can imagine that themselves and they'd like to see one own personal interpretation. I choose a panning scene of books apon books to convey the "field of paper flowers"
each book, like a flower, holding something special inside...blah blah.
Again, I understand this is just critism, constructive at that. I just wanted to let you all know, I put thought into each shot, timed it specifically, not just jumbling scenes and images together. And because its subject to artistic interpretation, opinons will vary.

Just letting that out. :)

PS. whats with the need for OPs? Do you win something?
Ops or no Ops, i find it odd poeple are asking for them, I sure you'll get them sooner or later, a video always strikes a chord with a certain individual ;)

Wrong forum, but I agree with you completly. I have nothing against literal videos, hell I have nothing against ANY type of video if its done well, and has thought put into it. I get that too sometimes. It only ever irratates me when some of my friends suggest things that really don't improve the video overall, and only add a cheap effect here there which has no importance. Different strokes for different folks I guess

P.S. I too enjoy conveying story in the imagery more so than the lyrics, I thing lyrical syncing is key to a song, but doesn't necessarily have to be in your face, or blatantly obvious.

I agree. It tends to make the video more substantial. mine is lacking in that area. i just needed to get it out of my system, everytime i heard that song i was seeing R.O.D., I got so inspired i just made the video...
i think for beginners getting a story across would be easier with an instrumental. I've been thinkng about another R.O.D video...but I'm holding out until the entire series is available. maybe even merge it will the OVA.

Agreed. I saw you video, I liked it. I think a lot of your editing was solid, and I'm sure your gonna make great AMV's in the future. And I know what you mean, sometimes you just gotta get an idea out there even if you have more ambitious ideas. Its good to give into inspiration.

I think there's a certain difference between video and illustration. When you put field "field of flowers" over an advertisement (or something like that), people have time to think about it. They can stare a while and absorb the meaning.
In a video there's only a second of footage over the words "field of flowers" and it's gone. You can't go to deep. I know rows of books doesn't seem all that deep and conceptual, but a good video (in my opinion) doesn't leave the viewer any time to think. You get a shot of something cool, and it's gone, and you want more, and the process repeats. The point being that the images never have the time to fully reach the viewer. I always find that I really start noticing things consciously on the third or fourth viewing.
The meaning put into a video comes (I think) from the general line through the video, where every clip has a feeling to it, and all those clips together tell a story or set a mood. This hapens almost subconsciously in the viewer as he's never allowed to grab on to a piece of footage and let his mind rest on it for more than a quarter second.

Yeah this the wrong forum, but THAT forum doesn't exist, and I don't know if this is really general talk. Anyways Shinji13 no need for the worry of flames. It's sad when someone comes to expect flames for just stating an opnion clearly  . I'm not sure how you got the impression we don't like the org? I love the org, no problems here. Sorry if I came off a bit "avante garde" or anything I wasn't generalizing AMV's, just some of my vids, which range from action to drama. Actually I thought it was a positive conversation, as opposed to some elitist dribble. "shoulder selves" I don't get this?

I agree with you totally risk one, when I work on a vid and play it back to myself I get whats going on storywise quickly, but to get a person who's viewing times maybe limited to once, or to ones that will watch over and over again to both enjoy the video, and understand on it various levels I think is a challenge in it self. This is were the "flow" becomes important, and the music has to grab you wether you know the story or not.
