Suggestions needed for new TV

Post by Phade » Sun Dec 21, 2003 4:43 pm

Hey All,

My 24" TV from 1980 is on its last leg. I need to get a new one but I have been out of the TV loop for quite some time. I need some help on what to look for and what to look out for. I know a 52" plasma is all the rage, but I only have a few hundred bucks to spend. If anyone can suggest a good set in the best bang-for-buck configuration under $400 (the cheaper, the better), I would really appreciate it.

Thanks again and have fun!! ^_^

Phade.

ok tv choises arent as varied as say, a pc monitor bt when geting one, just make sure it has all the inpputs ya need, taht its flat screen (obviosly) and most importantly, that it has a 100mhz refresh rate, instead of a crapy old 50mhx which most crapy tv's have.

100mhz!?... That's some refresh rate.

Well yes If you've got a rather large monitor, you might want to look at a VGA-box. I won't reccoment anything, namely because I tend to stray away from American sites... for obvious reasons.
If you go for plasma, you're looking at a few thousand. And if you're spending that much, you might ant to consider getting a projector. Well looking over this I don't think I've helped any, I might have even made things a bit more complicated. Oops

I'd suggest going to the library and looking at Consumer Reports. I've got the 2004 Buying Guide. Need to find my older ones. If I find it, I'll post their recommended best buys. The 2004 CR Buying Guide does not list ratings for TV sets.

For easy reference CR tested 19-20" inch sets in June 2001.

27", 32", and 36" TV sets were tested in December 02 and March 03.

For under $400 you're looking at 32" or smaller TV set.

The Toshiba I bought 2-3 years ago has been reliable. It's a 20" PureFlat screen w/ stereo speakers, A/V jacks front & rear, S-Video and component (not progressive) inputs. It was around $160; discontinued now.

Suggestion: get one that has component video inputs - which is not necessarily progressive even though they may use the same jacks. Progressive video will cost more, but component inputs alone should not. Practically all DVD players have component jacks now. And the difference in picture quality is very noticeable, especially with anime (meaning, rich colors).

BTW, some commentators are suggesting a wait until next year when the prices of LCD televisions is expected to drop.

I have a 3 years older model of This Tv that has worked nicely for the whole time period. The component input is VERY nice for anime, enriching the color, and I'm sure you can find a better deal at your local dealer if you look.

well, not realy. 100mhz for tv's has started appearing for over 2 years now so they should be alot more common around now, and when your trying to watch the whole seriese of eva in one siting, then your eye's realy would thank all the gods that they we're given you for that 100mhz. remember but that most tv's are at 50mhz which is why theirs allways a tiny bit of flicer if you look close, oh and, i think im confusing mhz and hz. anyway, just remember, 100 great, 50 baaad

NTSC Televisions are 60hz, (60 half fields per second) PAL TV's are 50hz. (50 half fields per second, mmm, interlacealicious)

Phade, a television is a television, if you want one that'll last just get an HDTV with the most modern hookups, that's about all you really need.

I just wonder about the projected life of a plasma based screen... |:
