1. Make AMVs that don't suck.

2. Win awards at CONs.

3. Make friends with other AMV artists who have won awards (Anime Weekend Atlanta is a good place to do this).

4. Write a guide for the newbies.

5. Be an ass!

I think I have the first two down... but I wasn't intending to ever get to #5. Though certain ex-girlfriends will claim that I've skipped past 3 and 4 and gone straight to 5.
