I don't know if anyone remembers last year, but there's one key problem I see: There are videos out there that can get nominated and *not* have the option to be downloaded. Sure it sounds impossible for a video to be nominated and not downloadable and yet...

IIRC last year there were at least two nominees who didn't have their video up for download. I remember because I made every effort to watch every video prior to voting and these two I couldn't get a hold of.

At the same time, one could easily argue that now with the advent of the Donut (it just started around the last VCA right), it should be easier, but at the same time it's still a possibility.

I'd also like to re-iterate what Nappy has said about the Oscars. I mean sure it sounds unfair and I try my best to watch them all, but to force someone to watch *and* download them seems a bit too much to me for an online contest. At the same time, don't get me wrong, I do see the merits behind it and subscribe to the philosophy of watching them all, but forcing that philosophy on others seems a bit too much. Ugh now I'm repeating myself...

Just to play Devil's Advocate to your Devil's Advocate: I think that since this is the AnimeMusicVideos.Org Viewers Choice Awards, it could be a reasonable expectation that all of the comparisons for videos should come from downloadable versions. Some videos have multiple versions that get submitted to different cons for various reasons, but only one can be downloaded off of Golden Donut. Other videos change from their con version with some tightened up editing and whatnot before they get put on the Donut. Are you should to unfairly base your opinion on the VCAs based on a potentially old version of a video?

Bogo brings up a very good point. Also, I notice that I like videos a lot more when I see them at conventions as opposed to watching them on my computer. So that might unfairly cloud my judgment.

Basically, either you have to see every video in the contest at a convention... or you have to see them all on your computer.

So basicly, there's no chance to make the VCA's remotely fair... Great. :|

But how can we dictate things are fair by forcing people to watch videos just to vote for their favorite? I mean even in our own democracy voters aren't required to watch every debate and follow every issue for a canidate. Phade also made it clear in an earlier post that this is a popularity contest.

I certainly can understand the frustration in *that* concept (the popularity contest part), but at the same time, the current rules are structured around that at the moment. If you want to talk about fair and so on, that would require re-arranging the entire purpose of the contest IMO (i.e. not a popularity contest). I don't see that happening though since it's called the *viewer's choice* awards and all ;).

At the same time, all we can hope is that viewers *will* watch as many videos as they can and so on. I just feel that everyone has brought enough potential problems with this that there is no "right" way to go about changing it.

I say we just get rid of the VCAs all together. Then we can all find something new to complain about. :?

Like the loss of the off-topic forums?

Wait, that's come and gone.

OK...how about the Recovering OT Junkie titles?

No, that's been done too.

Damnit.
