Region code... 0

Post by tagarth » Mon Dec 08, 2003 9:59 am

Does any one have anime dvds encoded in region code 0 (Zero)? I found a site (LINK TO BOOTLEGGER REMOVED) that only sells region code 0 dvds, and is it ever CHEAP! I have been thinking of ordering a number of there dvds, but since I have no region 0 dvds (And don't think I know anyone who does), I'm a little worried that it wont work on my region 1 dvd player, or my dvd rom (I know they say it works on everty thing, but....).

Does anyone own region 0 dvds? And has anyone ever ordered from discount anime before? Sounds to good to be true for me (Considering how much anime costs these days)

Those DVD's are bootlegs (as are all region 0 dvd's). We don't endorse bootleg dvd's here.

Most R0 dvds are indeed bootlegs. And while I still have my quarrel with "Anime Anytime" and don't want to be doing their dirty-work, I'll gladly kick anyone in the head for boasting having such things.

However there are some legitimate R0 DVDs out there... or some that have so many Regions supported that they might as well be R0.

Ghost in the Shell (Palm Pictures) Region 0
Oh My Goddess (AnimeEgo) Region 1 2 4

Not all R0 DVDs are bootleg. CPM/Software Sculptors' release of Cat Soup is region 0/all-region, and I've got several DVD releases from European music labels (which need to sell to several region markets) that are regionless. It's a legitimate option, which is not often taken because media companies like DRM.

In general, though, region 0 is the hallmark of a HK bootleg. If you see two or more of the following, you can be pretty sure that it's not a legitimate release:
* region code 0/none/all
* no dub track, subtitles in English and Chinese
* six or more episodes per disc
* price about 3/4 of what you normally pay for R1 at retail
* no distributor (CPM, ADV, Geneon, etc) name associated with the product

If a site only sells R0 anime, it's a cert that they are not a legitimate operation. Even if you do decide to rip off the original producers and buy from them, you should be very careful about what information you give out. Do you really want known criminals to have your credit card/bank account info??

If you want to talk like a LEET DVD EXPART:

There isn't really such a thing as a "region 0" DVD. All DVDs are encoded with a bit mask saying, for each of the seven regions, yes/no on whether it should play in that region. Usually the mask says "yes" for one region and "no" for all the others - but it's also possible for it to say "yes" on all of them (which is what people are calling "region 0") or some more complicated thing like "yes in regions 1, 2, and 5, no elsewhere".

There are certainly non-bootleg DVDs encoded for all regions. The DVDs in my copy of the Boogiepop Phantom box set are like that. The package label says "region 1", but the discs themselves are actually encoded all-region. I've also seen non-bootleg DVDs encoded without CSS encryption. Makers of DVDs have to pay a licensing fee to use CSS, so they have to weigh the cost against the benefits and sometimes they'll decide it isn't worth doing.

Oops, I gave you guys the wrong site I was looking at earlier, it's actualy [something else].

This site does seem to be legit, but I can't be sure. The distributer for most the anime on the site is FX (Main web site for FX is down :? )

They of course say their not boot leg, and they run through pay pal (Puts my heart at eas), still, can never be too sure. Some of the anime there does have english dub, but some doesen't. They have series that are not released here yet (One Piece, Narutu, Wolfs Raign, etc) in japanese dub, with eng sub.

I sent them an e-mail, asking them about how to contact the distributers and such, but I haven't gotten a reply yet (Mind you, I only sent it three hours ago, not expecting one for a while).

That is NOT a legit site. It is selling bootlegs.

The Naruto on the site is a perfect example.

Let's check one, Stellvia, say, which isn't in R1 release yet:

* region 0
* Japanese only, subs in English and Chinese
* 26 eps on 3 discs = 8-9 eps per disc
* price $30+shipping, about 1/3 what a series like this (see Berserk, recently) will go for as a box on R1 retail

That's four Instant Bootleg Checklist points -- there's no way you can look at this site and think they're remotely legitimate.

And that's without seeing the known-bootlegger logo on the top left of a Gasaraki cover that they are selling.

see the Pirate FAQ (surprised nobody linked this earlier) for more information. The amount of ripoffs out there must be seen to be believed.
