Hmm here's a question for you peoples.

Can you think of instances where anime/manga has been promoted shamelessly?

I have two:

Excel Saga: Puni Poemi....they give it a commercial....
Chobits:

CLAMP is known for putting references to their other works in their manga.

Beyond the Chobits/Angelic Layer link, there's:

several series have characters eating at the "Duklyon Cafe"
In Volume 9 of CCS, Kero is reading a game manual for Angelic Layer
In Angelic Layer, Hikaru is named after "a character from a manga." This is Hikaru from MKR, and includes a drawing of her from the back.
Also in Angelic Layer, Itchan sings "Catch You, Catch Me" (CCS opening 1) in Volume 1 (replaced with "Take My Breath Away" in the English version)
Another Angelic Layer one: Misaki sings "Hikari to Kage wa Dakishimete mama" (MKR Opening 3) in Volume 2 (Translated accurately this time)
The early parts of xxxHolic and Tsubasa are huge references to earlier work
The characters in Suki, Dakara Suki also appear in Gohou Drug
The trio from CCD appear in older forms in X

I know there's more, but I'm coming up blank on remembering them all.

Already done. Del Ray licensed both xxxHolic and Tsubasa, to be released stateside in May.

Ahem, and for the promotion episode 5 of FLCL comes to mind, they make several references to Lupin the III. Including one scene that was taken from the opening.

FLCL has referances to about 20 other anime in it, I wouldn't really call them promotional though.

I think I read in Shonen Jump a couple of months ago that Anna (from Shaman King *points to avatar*) has appeared in a couple of the artist's other works... this is supposedly her first main character role. That's the only one I can think of. Except--oh yeah--I can't remember what ep it is, but in Fruits Basket there's an ep where Tohru watches Pokemon with a couple of the younger Sohmas. And I hear that there's a TV show in Love Hina that also shows up in a couple of other anime--can't remember what the mini-show is called, though.

(What's the plural of "anime"?)
