Coming into this late: While formats like SACD and DVDAudio may both be aural overkill, there is a distinctive audible quality difference between them and regular CDs. The problem is that most dealers have no idea how to set up their SACD/DVDAudio systems, which results in the format sounding only slightly better than a CD.
The great thing about SACDs, though, is that they, themselves, can be backwards compatible. If the manufacture is nice enough, they can put a regular CD-encoded track on the first layer which can be played in a standard CD player. The SACD player will just read its information from the second layer. So it's possible it will not be a pain to rip from them. As far as I know, DVDAudio cannot do this.

It's contained in the sound wave itself. So, when the sound gets played back, and put threw the Digital to Analog Converter (DAC) and turned into an anlog signal, part of that can be decoded as an analog surround sound signal. Remember, it's only STORED digitally, everything, has to be converted to analog in order to be understandable by humans.alternatefutures wrote:Oh, and Izumi, can you please explain how a digital file can contain an analog signal? That's just baffling me.
